Silent Hill: Shattered Memories is the seventh game in the Silent Hill series which is a re-imagining of the first game and is also a series reboot; this game uses the same premise of the original game where the main character is searching for his missing daughter and the search had led him to Silent Hill.
This game has a different plot however and the characters in this version of the story have different personalities. It also features several potential endings to the game depending on what the player found during their playthrough.
It was developed by Climax Studios and published by Konami in 2009 for the Wii, PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable via the PlayStation Network.
There are two main settings and also two dimensions; the first setting is the town of Silent Hill which is played in third-person. Exploration is a major part of the game and is most prominent in the town, the player must explore the environment to discover clues.
When in Silent Hill the player has access to a Flashlight and Mobile Phone which are the main items in the game; the mobile phone is used to send messages, call numbers, take photos and also contains a map with a GPS. Taking photos of specific things will unlock secrets and reveal more information about the plot. The phone allows the player to save the game and is the only way to do this; players can be attacked while using the phone and it will emit static when a Raw Shock enemy is close to the player.
The second main location is a psychotherapist's office where the game enters first person; during these scenes the player must respond to various types of questions and complete some activities. The responses to the questions impact Silent Hill, the characters in the game, the game ending and even the monsters. The game returns to this location at different points in the game.
Most of the game takes place in the normal dimension but at certain points, the player will enter the “Nightmare” dimension which is filled with monsters. The player cannot hurt or kill the monsters, instead the player needs to find the exit to escape the dimension; the monsters in the game can be slowed down by knocking over objects in their path or by using flares. It is possible to hide from them to avoid detection however they can pull the player out of hiding spaces if detected. If the player dies in the Nightmare dimension then they will respawn at the start of the sequence with no other penalty.
The game features various puzzles throughout which need to be completed in order to progress through the game or to collect the 25 mementos which act as collectibles in the game.
