Tribes: Ascend is seeing a remarkable amount of success, considering it's still open beta. Over 400,000 players have participated, and phrases like "Gotta' go fast" and references to the game's communication tool, VGS, have gone viral through social media. As Hi-Rez Studios announced a release date of April 12 this morning at GDC, Tribes players likely were focused on the business at hand -- VAA.
Beta players will be pleased to know that all progress earned throughout the beta will carry over into release. Hi-Rez also encourages interested gamers to try the game now while it's in open beta, instead of waiting for full release. "Tribes is all about speed and movement," says Hi-Rez COO Todd Harris, and the implication is the longer you wait, the farther you'll be left behind.
Along with the release information, Hi-Rez also released a parody trailer for Tribes: Ascend. Players of the game will understand the humor straight away, but for the unexperienced a bit of setting up might be needed. Simply put, the video's tragic protagonist picks up the flag while moving quite slow. He realizes the consequences of his actions too late. Don't be a llama, keep moving and never stop.
