Nope, you didn't read the headline wrong; The Darkness is finally getting a well-deserved sequel. 2K Games has announced The Darkness II, almost four years after the original. Good things come to those who wait, amirite?
The Darkness II is being developed under a different name now, moving from Starbreeze Studios to Digital Extremes, best known for co-developing much of the Unreal Tournament series, BioShock and BioShock 2, and -- most recently -- the PC version of Homefront.
If you're unfamiliar with the concept, The Darkness is based on a comic series under the same name and follows the anti-hero protagonist Jackie Estacado. Since the events of the first game, he's become Don of the Franchetti crime family and bottled up the Darkness within him. After an unsuccessful attempt on his life, his supernatural powers resurface and he must unravel yet another messy conspiracy within the seedy underworld of organized crime -- with a sentient parasite-shadow-tentacle-thing from Otherworld as his closest ally.
Jackie has horrible luck, but at least that spells entertainment for the rest of us. The Darkness II will be out some time in the fall, for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC.
