The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky is the first in a trilogy of titles that together comprise the sixth flagship entry in Falcom's long-running Legend of Heroes JRPG series. Set in the Liberl Kingdom following a revolution spurred by the advancement of a crafting technology called orbment, the first Trails in the Sky chapter introduces players to the trilogy's main characters Estelle and adoptive sibling Joshua Bright. Both are budding "Bracers", jack-of-all-trades adventurers hired to protect and assist the populace in dangerous and even diplomatic requests.
Together, Estelle and Joshua embark on a journey throughout the kingdom to uncover the whereabouts of their father, the legendary S-Rank hunter Cassius Bright. The two will partner with a diverse cast of party members and interact with named NPCs, none of which are generic. This attention to background detail remains a standout feature of the Trails in the Sky trilogy even years after the release of the original titles.
Gameplay is divided between exploration of towns and dungeons, while battles take place on a separate screen and encompass strategy RPG mechanics including tile-based movement of characters and enemies across the battlefield and ranges for attacks, Arts and skills called "Crafts."
Originally released for Japanese Windows PC, the game was first localized for English release by Xseed Games on the PSP in 2011. A high-definition port was later released by Xseed for English Windows PC in 2014.
