Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Vol. 1: Grim Reality

Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Vol. 1: Grim Reality review
A fresh look at an old story

The newest Gundam franchise to reach America, SEED takes the original Gundam story and basically just gives it modern-day treatment.
Set in the C.E. (Cosmic Era) timeline, the story picks up an ongoing war between the Earth Alliance & ZAFT, having just escalated after the "Bloody Valentine" tragedy. Civilian Kira Yamato is a Coordinator living among Naturals who stumbles across the Alliance's newest weapon, the Strike Gundam, and is forced into combat as a pilot. Soon he comes across his childhood friend, Athrun Zala, who now is a pilot for ZAFT, and Kira must decide whether or not to join his old friend or turn against him and join the Alliance.
The animation is excellent, nicely mixing traditional animation with computer-generated imaging, and the music soundtrack is excellent, featuring top J-Pop artist T.M.Revolution. My biggest complaint about the series is that it seems to be litle more than a re-make of the original "Mobile Suit Gundam", with mostly name & scenery changes to set it apart. Otherwise it's another solid entry in the Gundam franchise, staying close to it's tried-and-true formula for success.
