How To Reboot Franchises 101

Summary:

Ah, Tomb Raider Reboot (because, you know, calling a later entry in your series the exact same thing as the first entry in the series is not confusing in the slightest). It's that game that was all about the hair and awkwardly trying to explain to people that you're not watching an adult film despite Lara's moans convincing them otherwise. Unhappy with the direction the series had gone this game sought to reboot the franchise and tells of an origin story of Lara, who in this game is not so much a hardened raider but more a young girl forced by circumstance to adapt to survive. Despite a few...

A fantastic new update

The good:

They've reinvented a lot of the whole style of the game but I think it still contains some of the essence of the old games and comics. The story was really brilliant, fantastic acting by Camilla Luddington. I loved all the different weapons and just the raw environment you are forced to survive in. Brilliant graphics that are just beautiful to look at especially when climbing the radio tower. The blood lake in the geothermal caves (reference to The Descent?). 1st time Lara swears! Adrenaline moments.

The bad:

I would have liked to be able to swim. Couple of glitches in the game. Story was a bit short (12 hours approx.). When Lara is upside-down at the start her fringe doesn't fall with gravity. Tombs weren't very hard or detailed

Summary:

Not being that old I've never played the original very early games but I have got AoD and the latest trilogy and I absolutely love these games. They aren't the best but I love Lara as a character and I loved all the locations and seeing the games develop. When I heard they were making a whole new Tomb Raider game I was so excited to see what they would, after being a bit dubious at the original concept I thought this new gritty approach would really bring Lara back into the high end gaming scene. I ordered the Survival edition which wasn't bad for the money and came with some good extras.

No Tombs Were Harmed in the Making of this Fil-...Game.

The good:

  • Breathtaking graphics
  • Easy to pick up
  • Voice acting
  • Solid animations
  • Optional puzzles

    The bad:

  • Misguided theme
  • QTEs
  • Little replayability
  • Tacked-on Multiplayer
  • No post-release support

    Summary:

Tomb Raider is a series well-known by gamers. Not as a franchise that impacted the industry but was rather...appealing. Lara Croft, the main character of the Tomb Raider games, was quite a symbol due to her *bleep* appeal (large breasts and tight clothing would generally garner attention, after all, see: this). But unfortunately, that's all that was remembered from her series. The games were standard action-adventure, and whilst they were actually fun and new for their time, the series became more and more bland with each passing title, eventually leaving Lara's tales in the shadows.

    Hands free immersion

    Summary:

It's become rather conventional for today's games to open with a roller coaster of CG animation, scripted sequences and quick time events. It's just what big name titles have to do these days to engage the player, like the first episode of a debut TV series where you can practically see the producers in the background throwing money at huge props, computer graphics, and expensive explosions. But what glorified linear sequences in games and grandiose episodes of TV series have often taught us is that their respective creators don't have the resources, the time, or the devotion to repeat the ...
