The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings

[edit] Background

The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings is an action RPG set in a dark fantasy world. It is the second installment of CD Projekt's Witcher series. The series is based off of popular books by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. The titular Witcher is Geralt of Rivia - but just what is a Witcher? Witchers are monster slayers for hire, skilled in the art of combat, magic, and alchemy. The Witchers are not quite human, having been enhanced by alchemy and magic, and as a result, common folk both loath and fear them, while also relying on their services.

In the Witcher 2, players will help Geralt restore his memory and defeat the "Kingslayer", aptly named for lopping off the heads of royalty. The world of The Witcher is dark and full of mature topics ranging from violence to sex and rape. Moral grey areas abound and players are always faced with decisions that are neither fully good or evil, but always fall somewhere in between, with implications for the player and the plot. The world is darker, grimier, and more run down than those of other fantasy series, and the caracters also reflect this reality: many are corrupt, or have both good and evil tendencies.

The new game features a new game engine to bring even richer graphics to the series. The Witcher Enhanced Edition was considered quite beautiful graphically, with a great soundtrack, and The Withcer 2 aims to surpass the first in both areas.

[edit] Game Play

The Witcher 2, like its predecessor, is an action RPG played in the 3rd person perspective. Players gain experience by killing monsters and completing quests. As a player levels, they can progress up a skill tree split into Swordsmanship, Magic, or Alchemy. Combat has been simplified but still relies onthe concept of "quick" versus "strong" attacks. Players who level up the Swordsmanship tree can unlock "finisher" moves and "group" moves that let them handle mobs of monsters or humans. The Magic tree is split between different signs.

Beyond the standard fare of combat and completing quests, the Witcher 2 also sees the return of minigames from the first game: players can earn coin and experience in drinking games, bar brawls, arm wrestling. Dice poker, the mini game of chance introduced in The Witcher 1 is also present.

[edit] Xbox 360 Version

The Witcher 2 is the first game in The Witcher franchise to be released on Xbox 360. This required some redesign of the game camera and targeting systems.

[edit] Features

  • Non-linear story: over 40 hours of gameplay, 4 different beginnings and 16 different endings.
  • large and varied game world: some locales include La Valette Castle, the bustling dwarven mining town of Vergen, fortresses, and the trading river port Flotsam.
