The Last of Us is an action-adventure game with survival horror elements; the game is set in a post-apocalyptic world during a 'zombie' apocalypse where a mutated strain of the Cordyceps fungus has turned the majority of the population into cannibalistic, hostile creatures.
The player controls Joel, a man who has been tasked to escort and safeguard a young girl named Ellie, as they travel across the United States in search of a group they can supposedly help.
It was developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony; this was first released in 2013 for the PlayStation 3. A HD version was released as The Last of Us Remastered in 2014 for the PlayStation 4.
Combat is a key element in this game, the player can use various long range weapons such as firearms and bows to deal with enemies from a distance. The player can also craft limited-use melee weapons and craft other weapons such as molotov cocktails; or other survival items like health.
Enemies can be attacked in various ways, the player can use stealth to attack enemies undetected or to sneak past them; when using stealth the player can use “Listen Mode” to locate enemies through walls. There is a dynamic cover system that allows the player to hide behind obstacles for a tactical advantage as they either avoid all combat or attack from behind cover.
There are some puzzles which must be completed to progress through the game; these puzzles typically allow Ellie to reach new areas. While the player controls Joel, the artificial intelligence system controls Ellie alongside the player, Ellie will also crouch when entering an area with enemies as a signal to the player there will be combat soon.
The artificial intelligence system is also applied to other AI in the game, including enemies. Human enemies will take cover, call for help and flank the player; Ellie can also assist in combat by announcing the location of enemies or by attacking enemies with a pistol or knife.
Multiplayer allows up to eight players to fight in three competitive gamemodes; two of the modes are team deathmatch based and the final mode pits players against each other to keep their faction alive as they search for and capture the enemies lockbox.
