The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim is the fifth flagship title in Bethesda Softworks' CRPG series, set in northern regions of Tamriel two hundred years after the events of Oblivion. The once mighty Empire lies fractured and is forced to maintain an uneasy truce with the Aldmeri Dominion that nearly conquered it, all while civil war erupts in the province of Skyrim. Further threatening the fate of Tamriel are the dragons of legend which have reawoken under the powers of the dread Alduin, and only the player can stop them as the Dovahkiin- Dragonborn.
After creating their Dragonborn character, players will journey throughout the province of Skyrim in open world exploration to complete both the main storyline and multiple sidequest arcs involving factions both historic and new to the series. For example, the Thieves Guild and the Dark Brotherhood can be joined, if the player knows how to get in contact with them.
Players have greater control over the skills and abilities they can learn by allocating points earned after gaining levels to several skill trees. As players explore the world map and conquer various dungeons, they will also learn Words of Power that are the key to unlocking powerful new abilities called Shouts which can be used in and out of combat. Not all skills are combat related: many allow players to craft items and equipment, including Daedric weapons and armor.
The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim utilizes the new Creation Engine for improved graphics and more varied terrain to better suit the mountainous and forested regions of Skyrim. Characters also appear more realistic and less "cartooney" than they did in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.
Bethesda would release three official add-on content packs for TESV including Dawnguard, Hearthfire, and Dragonborn. The first and last feature major storyline content, including the return of the island of Solstheim.
The PC release of TESV continues to support user-created mods generated using the game's "Creation Kit" tools. New to TESV is mod distribution via the Steam Workshop exclusive to Valve's digital games platform.
