Like all of my optimized straightforward walkthrus, this FAQ is a complete
walkthru for the game that has been optimized and organized to make it as fast
and easy as possible to complete the game. I don't give any reference-style
information, like a list of all clues, or encourage you to do unnecessary
things. In true walkthru fashion, I usually just tell you the answers without
explaining or rationalizing them (though I do offer some explanations in this
walkthru to help you understand what's happening).


This is the original release of this FAQ, so I have no special notes or credits
to report yet.


NOTE: This FAQ was written while playing the Suspect version that came with the
Lost Treasures of Infocom package that was released in 1991 by Activision. As
far as I know, everything will be the same for other game versions.

*** STEP 1: Discover the body. ***

Start off by joining the sheik who waves at you (JOIN SHEIK). After Veronica
spills her drink, use the WAIT command, then choose to stop waiting after she
leaves. Follow her with the FOLLOW VERONICA command, then use the G (short for
AGAIN) command to get entangled with the butler and another guest.

Use the WAIT command, and stop waiting after you get disentangled and brushed
off. Type GO TO OFFICE, then C (short for CONTINUE) until you make it there.
When you arrive, you'll find Veronica's body slumped behind a desk. Whoa, she
sure got herself killed quick! You weren't *that* far behind her.

*** STEP 2: Investigate the fairy costume wearer. ***

Touch the body to find that it's still warm, and examine the fairy costume it's
wearing to see that it's the same one that you saw "Veronica" spill the drink on
in the ballroom. However, the woman you followed here was not Veronica, so start
gathering evidence that might indicate that.

Get the fairy mask, and the front doorbell should ring. Type GO TO ENTRY HALL,
then use the C command until you get there. You should arrive just in time to
see the butler let Alicia Barron in. Examine Alicia to see that she's wearing a
soaking wet overcoat. Go south to the front porch and check the rain (LOOK AT
RAIN) to notice that it's slacked off to just a drizzle. So why was Alicia's
coat soaking wet if she just now arrived?

Let's go confiscate that coat as evidence. The butler is going to hang it in the
east coat closet, so go north once, then type GO TO EAST COAT CLOSET and use the
C command until you get there. Wait for the butler to hang up Alicia's coat,
then get it (GET WET OVERCOAT).

Next, go to the kitchen using GO TO KITCHEN and repeated C commands. The last
part of the kitchen's description should say that the trash basket contains a
broken glass. If not, wait until the butler puts "Veronica"'s broken glass into
it, then take the trash basket (*not* the glass itself). If the woman in the
ballroom wasn't Veronica, the fingerprints on that glass should help prove it.

*** STEP 3: Hide a false piece of evidence and save a real one. ***

Return to the office using GO TO OFFICE and repeated C commands. Look underneath
Veronica's dead body (LOOK UNDER BODY) to find a small object on the floor
beneath it. Get the small object to find that it's a silver bullet. It's from
your gun belt, so return it there (PUT BULLET IN BELT). You don't want any extra
evidence pointing to you as the killer.

Go to the library next (GO TO LIBRARY and C) and hide behind the chair. Wait
there until Michael and Colonel Marston have a secret meeting involving a piece
of paper. Stop waiting and reveal yourself (GET UP), then wait until they leave
the room. Follow Marston (FOLLOW MARSTON and G) until you reach the Near
Fireplace area. Immediately get the paper that Marston has already tossed into
the fire so you can present it as evidence later.

*** STEP 4: Feed evidence to the detective. ***

Return to the office using the GO TO OFFICE and C commands, where you should
find the police detective and Sergeant Duffy. (If not, look around until you
find them.) Look in the fairy mask to find a dark hair, then have the detective

After Duffy runs off to do that, give the wet overcoat to the detective. He
won't think much of it, so tell him about the rain (TELL DETECTIVE ABOUT RAIN).
Next, give him the paper you saved from the fire. Get the manila folder from the
office desk, then look in the waste basket to find a business card that you can

Go after the detective if he left the room, and give him the manila folder and
business card when you catch up to him. Go to the garage (GO TO GARAGE and C),
then open the tool chest. Get the crowbar, then use it to open up the BMW's
trunk (OPEN BMW TRUNK WITH CROWBAR). Get the trust folder, then go find the
detective again. (He usually stations himself next to the ballroom's fireplace.)

Give him the trust folder, then wait if necessary for Sergeant Duffy to get back
with the hair analysis. After he does, have the detective check the broken glass
for fingerprints (DETECTIVE, FINGERPRINT GLASS), then wait (and follow the
detective around if necessary) until Duffy returns with the analysis.

*** STEP 5: Arrest the guilty ones. ***

Since you've already given the detective all the evidence he needs, all that's
left to do is tell him to arrest Michael and Alicia (DETECTIVE, ARREST MICHAEL
AND ALICIA). Be sure to read through the ending summary to see how all the
pieces of the mystery fit together.
