At least Sonic's getting back on his feet


Retro revivals are a dime a dozen - from New Super Mario Brothers, to Contra 4, to Mega Man 9 and even to Rocket Knight, if a series was on the NES, SNES or Sega Genesis, it's bound to be brought back to life. While I wait for Square-Enix to butcher the hell out of Actraiser, I decided to give Sonic The Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 a shot. I'm not a big Sonic fan, having only gotten some real enjoyment out of his sidescrolling games (basically, if there's a Z-axis in a Sonic game, I probably didn't enjoy it), but what the hell, why not just give this a shot? It's been years in the making; does it satisfy the hardcore audience, or does it just fall flat on its face?

Sonic The Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 is the long awaited true sequel to Sonic The Hedgehog 3. It's the game that the "true" fans of this franchise have been waiting for after 16 years of disappointment in the form of cancelled Saturn games, lackluster generation 6 games (hey, some people just didn't like Sonic Adventure 1 and 2) and the godawful piece of shit that is Sonic 06... so why not return the little blue hedgehog to his roots on a console - to be exact, all of the seventh generatio...

Sonic The Hedgehog 4 is one of those games that everybody has been waiting for, especially the Sonic fanboys who think all of the games should be like the Genesis originals. Now, I thought they had something going on with the daytime stages of Sonic Unleashed, but nope, this new one decided to be completely 2D with (botched) 3D graphics. Personally, I think it's a bitch move, but then again, Sonic Team isn't doing this - some company I've never heard of called Dimps is. The actual execution is okay with some stupid mistakes really preventing it...
