A turning point for skating sims

The good:

+ Excellent representation of skating, smooth board movements
+ Easy to learn, difficult to master "flick it" controls accurately represent the feel of skating
+ Sandbox style overworld that's fun to leisurely skate around
+ "Hall of Meat" Break as many bones as possible, need I say more?
+ Challenges vary in difficulty, some are simple while others will have you resetting frequently
+ Plenty of ways to customize the look and style of your skater and gear
+ Create and upload skate videos and photos to skate.reel
+ Online modes including an awesome freeskate mode where players can skate around with each other

The bad:

- Some annoying glitches that should have been fixed
- Occasionally the game executes the wrong trick
- Lackluster soundtrack

Summary:

First a little background info about the author. I've been playing Skate since the day it was released, so I guess you could say I've spent ample time with the game, and I hope you'll take that into consideration as you read my review. I'll admit, when I first saw the camera my first instinct was to close my browser. I guess that was the Tony Hawk fan inside of me saying "Pull back bro," but I fought my urges and downloaded the demo from PSN. "Holy *bleep*ing shit," I thought loading up the game for the first time. From the initial moment my skater's board hit the pavement, I was filled wit...

Skate: Has it broken the mould?

The good:

  • Fun, exciting gameplay.
  • Graphics look good with very few glitches.
  • Online is addicting.
  • The skate reel means endless opportunities for you to have fun.

    The bad:

  • Soundtrack isn't the greatest
  • Voice acting is questionable. It's seems slightly out of sync at times.
  • Tough competition from Tony Hawks

    Summary:

What EA have embarked on is a very brave thing. In the skateboarding world, the gaming side is dominated by one particular brand. That brand being Tony Hawk. With Hawk's series being so popular, Skate was always going to find it tough and when Neversoft announced they'd be releasing Tony Hawk's Proving Ground around the same time, EA's job became that more harder. But have they finally been able to dethrone the king of skateboarding from a position he's held for well over a decade?

To begin with, Skate is certainly no clone of Tony Hawk's. Skate's controls are certainly very different. Unlik...

    Forget Tony Hawks think Skate!

    The good:

    Great physics.
The brilliant graphics or street roads, rails , character models everything is great.
The Movement in tricks e.g. flip tricks , grinds , grabs look very real.
The brands and bands on this game are good i would say i like the brands a lot better than some of the song choices but they fit the game well.

    The bad:

Very annoying tasks which will wind you up first time around with out fail.
    No co-op freeskate.

    Summary:

I wasn't really looking forward to skate untill i saw a clip of it in game which looked great. I went in and got it that same day , on my way back home to see what this game had to offer i kept thinking that this game was going to be a cheap copy of Tony hawks. The realalistic moves which can be proformed everywhere anytime which was really impressive , when you first get this its pretty hard to get going but you will get there are about 30 or so minutes.

    Graphics:

I was really impressed by the graphics of this game even now when i play it , it still amazing me when you pull of that kickfilp ...
