Dragon Ball Series
Arguably the beginning of one of the world's most influential anime/manga series by Akira Toriyama, inspired by the Chinese legend "Journey to the West".
Many years ago there existed an extraordinarily powerful young boy named Goku, he lived alone in the mountains having been trained by his late adopive grandfather Gohan in the ways of martial arts. His prized posession was an orange ball, with four red stars in it, a keepsake from his grandfather. One day, a young girl named Bulma explained to him that this ball was one of seven ancient and magical "DragonBalls" that, when brought together, would summon the eternal dragon Shenron who would grant the lucky adventurer responsible a single wish.
Goku agreed to accompany Bulma on her journey to gather the DragonBalls, and during his adventures he met many characters; rivals, allies, and rivals-turned-friends. Many of these characters appear in the later DragonBall Z and GT series. As his strength increases due to several martial arts teachers he meets during the series Goku defeats a would-be Emperor, competes in the World Martial Arts Tournament, crushes an entire army single-handedly, and even protects the whole world from the tyrannical rule of the almighty Piccolo. Twice.
