Saints Row 2 is the sequel to the popular Saints Row sandbox style game; it was also developed by Volition and published by THQ for several platforms in 2008.
The game takes place 5 years after the first game in the fictional city of Stilwater; the protagonist from the first game is now the leader of what is left of the Third Street Saints gang. Three rival gangs have taken over some of the area and need to be dealt with if the Third Street Saints gang intends to regain their former glory. In addition to this, the Ultor Corporation is causing problems and will threaten the stability and safety of the new Third Street Saints gang if they are not dealt with.
The game features plenty of customization options; players can fully customize their character with a detailed system that includes more unusual options such as walking and fighting styles. There are various safe houses in the game named Cribs, which can also be customized with themes and decorated with purchased items.
As leader of the Third Street Saints gang, the player also has customization options that allow them to make the gang unique; various aspects such as outfits, gestures, and graffiti styles can be customized by selecting from a range of serious and comedic options.
The vast open world environment allows the player to explore it using different types of vehicles; these vehicles can be bought, unlocked as a quest reward or stolen. Road vehicles such as cars and motorcycles can be customized to give them a color scheme, hydraulics and more. Other vehicles such as aircraft and boats can also be stored if the player owns a hangar or dock.
An important feature of the game is the Respect System where the player needs to earn Respect points to progress through the story. It takes one full Respect bar to undergo a story mission, and the bar is emptied once it begins. Respect is earned by completing side-missions and the various mini-games.
Combat in Saints Row 2 is similar to the first game; players can use melee and firearms as weapons to attack enemies with. In addition to the standard melee weapons, the player can use pieces of the environment to attack enemies with. Melee combat allows the player to use combos, charged attacks and special finishing moves; when in close range, it's possible to use an enemy as a human shield to block bullets.
Players must be careful with how they act in public, or their notoriety will rise; once notoriety reaches a certain level the police will be called, and if it continues to grow, stronger types of police units will be brought in. The notoriety lowers over time by avoiding the police or paying some money at a confessional.
The campaign can be played co-op with another player through the online network; while in co-op mode, players can explore the city and play minigames together while they also progress through the story. While playing co-op each player is rewarded for completing missions and mini-games. There are no restrictions on the co-op mode allowing players to join each others game at any point, and there are no limits on the physical distance between the two players.
Competitive multiplayer is available through three gamemodes, two of these modes are deathmatch orientated; the first mode is solo based and the second is a team orientated mirror of it. The final mode pits two teams against each other as they fight to control a neighborhood by competing in activities to earn money.
