Rodea: The Sky Soldier

  • Released on Nov 10, 2015
  • By Prope for Wii U, Wii, 3DS

[edit] Background

Rodeo the Sky Soldier is an action-adventure game about Rodea the humanoid robot who has the ability to fly and has a “heart”. These two qualities make Rodea a soldier in order to fulfill his promise of protecting a series of floating islands known as the Kingdom of Garuda.

Rodea the Sky Soldier is the product of collaboration between developers Prope and Kadokawa Games. It's a Nintendo exclusive and is only available for the Wii, Wii U and Nintendo 3DS.

[edit] Gameplay

Rodea The Sky Soldier is a rail shooter game that has players flying through the air and defeating enemies. There are obstacles in the sky which will get in the way of the player such as enemies and crates which need to be avoided. Rodea can glide for roughly 10 seconds without any assistance before he plummets out of the sky.

The gameplay is different on each platform; the Wii uses the Wii Remote to aim at solid objects and demands the played press the B button to perform aerial manoeuvres; this version also has temporary power ups which are needed to overcome obstacles, these include a machine gun.

The Wii U and 3DS versions demand the use of the joysick and control pad to point Rodea in a specific direction and also to launch him towards it; however in these versions players can purchase permanent upgrades and there are no temporary power ups. These versions also have an added fuel system; this forces the player to land when the fuel has run out and specific actions can drain the fuel at a faster rate.

There are over 20 different stages for players to beat and they become progressively more difficult. The game does encourage some exploration for players to find all the collectables hidden on each stage; to do this the player must land and search on foot. Some stages contain hidden special coins which can be used to unlock new attacks, music and even a first person mode.

Rodea uses charge attacks and guns to defend himself from the enemies in each stage; fighting is easier when on the ground and the game also contains boss battles with strong enemies.
