Powermonger is a real-time strategy game where players vie for control of maps by conquering territory and defeating any opposing military factions. The player controls several armies which they can use to defeat the enemy forces and conquer non-allied towns. Friendly towns will supply new equipment, troops and captains (meaning more armies) as well as vital food resources. Armies may also attempt to establish new towns to create new resource pools.
The title was designed by Bullfrog co-founder Peter Molyneux, who helped create the similar Populous which was an early success for the developer before it was acquired by Electronic Arts in early 1995.
