Kickstarter funded and otherwise doomed to never have existed, Pillars of Eternity is a love letter to fans of classic over-the-head RPGs like Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale and Neverwinter Nights. Not so coincidentally, Pillars of Eternity is being developed by Neverwinter Nights 2 developers Obsidian Entertainment. Unfortunately it has taken forever to finish, as Obsidian has been busy with South Park: The Stick of Truth and several ongoing side-projects. Pillars of Eternity, however, is 100% Obsidian's baby and you know they won't let it go out into the wild unprepared.
Gameplay in Pillars of Eternity will focus on party-based, real-time (with pause) tactical combat. The player will control a party of characters each with their own unique spells, abilities and statistics. Positioning these characters and using their spells in a strong order will be the difference between life and death.
Pillars of Eternity is planned for release on PC on March 26, 2015. If you thought Divinity: Original Sin was a great retro top-down RPG, then you ain't seen nothin' yet.
