Monster Hunter is a franchise that went from rags to riches in a matter of a few years, thanks to the three main PSP instalments. Becoming one of the fastest selling games in Japan, Monster Hunter Freedom 2 is one of my all-time greatest videogames, and my passion is shared greatly throughout the Neoseeker community.

The premise of Monster Hunter is fairly simple; you create a rookie hunter and plunge him into the perilous universe of Capcom's Action RPG. Firstly, you will be acquainted with the variety of different weapons and items before heading out to kill your first prey. You will be troubled with menial tasks such as gathering herbs and killing smaller beasts, but several hours down the road and you will have hit the cream of the crop.

The rest of the game will be spent killing the larger foes, then scouring their dead husks for materials. These can then be used to upgrade armour and weaponry; building the best gear is seen as the long-term objective of the game.

Monster Hunter Freedom 2 isn't just a single player experience though. Sitting down with a few mates and booting up individual copies of the game will allow up to four players access to the multiplayer component. Though it's not executed to perfection, the ad-hoc play is superb and one of my most memorable gaming highlights.

The one thing I absolutely detested about the game was the lack of real online play, that means no Xlink or Ad-Hoc Party. When Monster Hunter Freedom 2 G was announced, I thought the obvious solution would have been to include infrastructure, but sadly it was excluded, and so I lost faith in portable Monster Hunter titles.

It's 2010 now, and Monster Hunter is already branching onto the Wii and Xbox 360 with online focuses. For Capcom and the MH team to ignore online support for the next PSP-based Monster Hunter would literally be diabolical. Just for reference, it's not only MHF2 that is betrayed by the lack of online support, Phantasy Star Portable also suffers from the exact same problems.
