One Piece: Unlimited Word Red is an action-adventure game based on the One Piece manga and anime. It follows a long line of games based on the One Piece series and is the fifth title to be released into the Unlimited sub-series.
It begins with an introduction to the protagonist, Monkey D. Luffy and his crew; they dock at a long island and take a trip to it's major city as a break from their trip. While on the island, Luffy discovers that his allies have been captured and that he needs to free them.
The combat system uses the stretch ability Luffy has and fights are mostly based around basic combos; special abilities can be used once enough damage has been inflicted on the enemy. Each area contains many weak enemies that must be defeated before the player can battle the boss. The quest goals requires the player to use all nine characters in fights and bonuses are also given for using a variety of moves. The simple parry system adds a one-button blocking ability to protect against some attacks.
There is a RPG element with many mechanisms such as the Skill Words and Item Words commands. Players can do some crafting and there are hundreds of collectibles to find in the world. Combat moves do no unlock however their stats are increased over time.
The main story mode has a small multiplayer component where a second player can fight alongside Luffy; this second player is invincible and can fight with the main player during story missions on the console versions of the game or on side-quests for the portable versions. The Battle Coliseum side-game allows for multiplayer as the player(s) fight against a variety of bosses and complete survival challenges together.
There are several mini-games throughout the game and half-way through the Story mode a bridge to a small island filled with mini-games will unlock. It sees the return of the Butterfly Hunting and Fishing mini-games seen in additions to the series.
The portable versions of the game can have up to 4 players in one instance for multiplayer modes and the console versions can only have 2 players at once.
