Game Play
The game of ice hockey is generally played over three, 20-minute periods on a sheet of ice. However, new to the franchise this year is a new partnership with NBC Sports, adding the feel of a true broadcast to the franchise with NBC Sports commentators Mike "Doc" Emrick" and Edddie Olczyk with TSN analyst Ray Ferraro with insights from ice level.
And to further expand on that: the use of 9000 individual crowd models, the most for any sports video game.
The NHL Collision Physics that are used in this game were originally developed from from the Player Impact Engine used in the FIFA franchise, now enhanced with the new 12-Player NHL Collision Physics, and add Real Puck Physics, completely rebuilt from the past games and you've got an authentic hockey experience that you won't find anywhere else!
The players themselves have been rebuilt, with the models having a total of three distinct layers: body, equipment, and the jersey, with the players showing a new level of likeness, animation and emotion. To further add to the realism: an evolved Skill Stick with the right stick control setup that includes puck protection, receiving passes in-stride and an arsenal of sick dekes that'll rival Pavel Datsyuk's sick dekes!
Player intelligence has evolved to include players reading & reacting to potential plays on the ice to include anticipation of passes, recognition in the scoring area and enhanced zone breakouts, all of which to improve the flow of the action!
