The impending release of firmware update version 2.36 for the PlayStation 3 brings few eye-popping developments outside of general software standard and stability improvements.  However, Sony Computer Entertainment did confirm on the side that the version 2.40 firmware update on the horizon will include far more visible and substancial improvements, namely access the PS3's XMB (XrossMediaBar) system menu interface during gameplay, as well as the launch of the Trophies reward system.

In-game access to the XMB has been promised since the launch of the PS3 itself, and was delayed due ever since due to technical issues.  Something akin to the Xbox 360 Dashboard quickly became one of the most requested features for the PS3 after launch thanks to the convenience and potential offered, including quicker access to custom soundtracks for supporting titles.  Unfortunately, further details regarding what XMB menu features can actually be accessed during gameplay have yet to be confirmed at time of writing.

Trophies meanwhile have been compared to the well-received Achievements system implemented for Xbox 360 titles.  Complete set objectives during gameplay, and your user account gets a reward to proudly display to other console gamers.  The Trophies earned are up to game developers, and these are expected to be compatible with the upcoming PlayStation Home community-based social networking service.  Lair is one of the first games to include Trophies, so players diligent enough with the Factor 5 titles could already have a few rewards to their name.

I just hope In-game XMB would be what we hope it will be. That is, access to custom soundtracks....Mind you, I'm sure that at the very least, you'd get 'in game messaging', which is something...."In-game Messaging" was announced earlier this year, for a June/July release, and now it has evolved to full in-game XMB.

I hope at least some of my games support trophies (patch or otherwise), and that I won't have to go back and re-play the game just to get them >_>
