$499 5' Cat-5 Ethernet cable - sadly, not a joke
William Henning - Friday, June 13th, 2008 | 10:51AM (PT)

I am ashamed to own a Denon receiver, this is worse than Monster Cable!

Initially, I saw a post about this ummm.... "interesting" pricing at the Inq.

A $499 5' ethernet cable? I thought they must be kidding.

Unfortunately the Inq had it right; as visiting the Denon site brings us this:

Right now, I am ashamed to own a Denon receiver. Don't buy that Denon overpriced cable, go to a dollar store, and buy a $0.99 5' Cat-5 cable, or to a network equipment supplier and buy a $5 Cat-6 cable - you cannot possibly tell the difference.

Wow. And I thought when I saw a roll of 500 foot cat5e cable for $40 a few weeks ago was a bit much.

Slayer, that would only be 8c a foot, not much.

However this stuff is $100 a foot.. geez!

I am still waiting for someone to tell me why it costs this much. A company doesn't just do this for no reason, there is obviously a market for it or something.

The price is because of it's supposed 'superior audio' and signal transfer....

It is a load of BS. They are basically trying to sell it as a 'premium cable to go with our premium products'. They suggest using this with with their DVD player.

Jeez, if they're going to go overboard like this, with the price, they could at LEAST make it a CAT-6 cable, jeez >_>

NOTE: Read the small image in this article.

What's the difference between CAT-# speeds?

Cat-6 is for Gigabit networks, and it has less interference.

In my case, for some reason, Cat-5 wasn't working properly, despite the fact that we were CLEARLY under the 100Mb limit of Cat-5 cables, and we (should) be less than 100 feet away (Is it 100 feet, or meters, where Cat-5 cables start getting signal degredation?)....

So we got a long cat 6 instead, and it was JUST long enough >_>

100 meters (300 something feet).

Did you make sure you had the right cable? As in if you needed a crossover cable or not?

This just makes me want to 1: Puke 2: Hurt someone.

Not a normally violent person but his is price gouging at its worst, or is that best?

I think two things at once, 1: How many stupid/unfortunate people bought this. 2: Why this is being sold as a cable that makes audio/video better, its for data, not video, thats like running DVI thru a phone line, some things are meant for audio, others for video and still others for data, I hope the BBB gets a hold of em, not much but at least the slightly smarter people that are still stupid enough to buy them mite be smart enof to check the BBB. I I reject your reality and substitute my own.
