8 Days, and The Getaway suffer Sony's prioritizing
Sony says they're canning two planned PS3 titles, The Getaway 3 and 8 Days, due to a "redistribution of resources and budget" (Update: Red Alert has been added to the list as well, though whether or not this was EA's decision or Sony's remains to be seen). The company affirmed the titles will not be resurrected in the future, as well. Said Sony in an official statement:
"This decision was made following an internal review of all games and it was deemed that with the incredibly strong list of exclusive first party titles coming up both this year and in the near future, resource should be reallocated to enhance those projects closer to completion."
It's sort of a shame for both games; The Getaway 3 screenshots looked pretty promising, and these were produced three years ago. But it's not exactly surprising either; not much was heard about either game, and The Getaway's second PS2 iteration, Black Monday, sold about half as much as its predecessor (1.67 million vs. 3.37 million), suitably so, given its 57 ranking versus the original's 72 on Metacritic.
The premise for 8 Days sounded pretty original: play a guy seeking revenge on a mob syndicate, with an eight day time limit. The gameplay incorporated real world functionalities like time, maps and locations (it was said to utilize Google's maps service). The game would see you travelling all around the world with such a scope it'd probably put GTA IV to shame, with graphical quality to match. Tragic!
Was looking forward to Getaway after those 2005 screen shots.
Poor employees gettin the shaft. sony probably didnt even pay them.
