Couple divorces over World of Warcraft
Lydia Sung - Wednesday, February 20th, 2008 | 10:46AM (PT)

Yet another relationship falls victim to an MMO.

And here we thought these things were just an urban legend.

A woman in California has filed for divorce, citing World of Warcraft as the reason for her decision.  The kicker here is that she was the one who got her husband into the MMO.

Jocelyn, a 28-year-old gamer and former Blizzard employee, gave the game to her husband, Peter, as a Christmas present back in 2004.  In just nine months, the devestating effects began to show, and six years of marriage went down the drain.

"He would get home from work at 6:00, start playing at 6:30, and he'd play until three a.m. Weekends were worse - it was from morning straight through until the middle of the night," she told Yahoo! Games in an interview.  "It took away all of our time that we spent together. I ceased to exist in his life."

Peter's addiction also got in the way of everyday life, as he began neglecting household chores and stopped paying bills.

Jocelyn and Peter are no longer a couple but remain friends, though Jocelyn says she's been cutting back on WoW since the divorce.  Peter, on the other hand, still plays religiously.

I think it's pretty pathetic that someone actually let a game take over their life i never thought that games would have such an influence on peoples everyday life just goes to show what a bad influence games can have on you.

from all the things that have happened because of WoW (even a kid died playing it in an internet cafe for approximately 36 hours straight, and that's a fact)
i have to say that
THIS GAME SHOULD CEASE TO EXIST, IT DOES MORE HARM THAN GOOD

Well, on the positive side of things, WoW probably brought many people together into marriages and relationships, so, you know, what WoW can give, WoW can also take away.

As some of the posters already know, I play WoW as well, but letting it (or any game) get in the way of everyday responsibilities... well, let's say EPIC FAILURE is sure to follow.

Honestly, WoW is really huge so it's often easiest to blame, but this sort of thing happens because of other online games as well.

Consider this a recap and commentary for those who don't visit both sites religiously.

I used to be hardcore from 2004-2006, it was then I realized how bad the game was and how crappy the programmers for it are.

So I quit because it was a con.

What? He only plays that much? No wonder she divorced him. He really wasn't committed to it. The article, however, seems to imply that she thought he was too involved in the game. Obviously, the reporter has not clue about the game.

Nice job for the now deleted WoW spammer.

I love how people like to get their websites blacklisted here. nothing like having *bleep*.com as your url.

Maybe she was a useless woman BEFORE the game?

I'd rather play wow than spend time with my wife. My girlfriend on the other hand...I don't log in at all on the weekends I'm with her.

I hate people that say, "It's the games fault". Those are the same people that blame the devil when they're caught masturbating. Seriously folks, I wish everyone would just take responsibility and quit blaming the "game".

Wow, first, did you really just read all the way to my post? Nice.

Wow is just a game "period" I play, I lead a guild of more than 200 people. We have fun we achieve and we are mostly normal. I have a wife, a 10 year old and i ensure I spend my time with them. But at the end of the day, a bowling night used to be a normal event in a persons life. Now, people simply login to a virtual "bowling night" and have virtual social encounters. The problem is, when people obsess, they can go overboard. Not a wow issue. It's a personal issue, and they need to get help. Same goes for alcholism, drug addicts, etc...

So addicts unite and stay healthy :-)

You would think that a former employee of blizzard would know the addicting effects that WoW has on people before she gave the game to her own husband, so she kind of brought this on herself. At the same tim, a grown man should know when it's okay to play a game and when you are neglecting responsibilies and real life.

What's this real life stuff people keep talking about? Is it a new PSP game?
