Media Create: Super Smash Bros. Brawl sales hit over 800K copies during first week
Leo Chan - Friday, February 8th, 2008 | 11:59AM (PT)

Not quite one million units by their reckoning, but still a helluva lot

Supplies for Super Smash Bros. Brawl may have been more than a little tight in distribution channels during its first week of sales, but Japanese industry sales tracker Media Create can confirm that it was all for good reason; Nintendo and Sora's latest party brawler shot straight to the top of the video game charts in Japan during launch week. No less than 819,647 copies of SSBB were sold across the country during the week of January 28th to February 3rd, far outselling Devil May Cry 4 for the PlayStation 3. That said, Capcom's newcomer nevertheless secured second place with sweet sales of 205,390 units.

The PlayStation 2 still makes a strong showing in the top five with both Tales of Destiny: Director's Cut (featuring the option to play the game as the main character's pseudo-rival, Tales series heartthrob Lion/Leon Magnus) and Suzumiya Haruhi no Tomadoi at third and fourth place, respectively. Limited Edition packages of the new Haruhi game also came with a Figma-brand figurine, which certainly helped boost sales for the title. Wii Fit also continues to be a fixture in Media Create's sales chart, rounding off the top five.

We see more newcomers dominate Media Create's software charts, including Disgaea 3 for the PS3 which made its debut at a very respectable sixth place, the Xbox 360 version of Devil May Cry 4, and the PS3 version of Assassin's Creed. Interestingly, the only DS title in Media Create's top ten this time around is the handheld port of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games.

Perhaps this slow showing for the DS on the software side was also reflected in the sales for the hardware itself. The DS was not only overthrown from its lofty position by Nintendo's OTHER console, the Wii, but it was also beaten by Sony's PlayStation Portable to ultimately land in third place on last week's Japanese hardware ranking. It should be noted that sales for console hardware overall took a dive last week compared to the weeks before.

DMC 4 does not have the best ratings by many game magazines because of its extreme repetitiveness. I don't know why it has second position in sales statistics.

It IS interesting because Brawl did WAY, WAYYY Better than Halo 3 in sales. I knew it would. You know why? Because Brawl is better than H3lo any given day. 59,000 for Halo 3 in it's 1st week, over 800,000 for Brawl in it's first week. Apparently people over there appreciate Nintendo characters more than an idiot in a space suit. That's right, I went there. Anyway, I suppose I have angered many H3lo fans...but I don't care. You could say that Brawl sucks, but look at the sales and then say Brawl sucks.

your Stupid ryu...people like it because you can pound the crud out of each other with so many Nintendo characters. BTW: Halo is stupid...what is so great about it? Brawl has sold over 1 million copies in Japan in 11 days. Halo sold probably 70,000 in 11 days. plus, you get adventure mode, giant mode, lightning mode, tiny brawl, and many many great things that Halo doesn't have. It also doesn't have the 10 hour Subspace Emissiary. Now do you see why many people like it? Give me one good reason why people like Halo.

Halo is fun and all, but the thing with Halo is that YOU HAVE TO ACTUALLY BE GOOD AT IT TO ENJOY IT. Brawl is a game that anyone, even if they lose badly, comes out with a fun experience. Microsoft can be overlooked as sort of the "noob" to the industry. The SSB series has had a longer time to be perfected.
