Dual-CPU Skulltrail motherboard ready to smash benchmarks
Kevin Spiess - Monday, February 4th, 2008 | 12:49PM (PST)

Two CPU slots allows up to eight cores of processing power.

A new motherboard came out today that's a little bit different. Some would even say its special.

Intel's 'Skulltrail' platform has the ability to use two CPUs simulatenously. This high-end hardware is aimed at the hardcore out there -- because now, If you have the cash, you can have 8 cores of processing power at your disposal. Additionally, the motherboard has 4 PCIe 16x slots. Both SLI and CrossFire can run on Skulltrail, which is another first.

Skulltrail has a FSB of 1600 MHz, and can handle Penryn CPUs. A 1000W+ power supply is recommended for the Skulltrail.

Expect record benchmarks to begin breaking left and right with this mammoth monster from Intel.

You can read a review of the Skulltrail over here.

The $1k extreme cpu buyers now have more money to spend on this complete waste of money machine.

Think to yourself, are you better off buying affordable high-end gaming machines every two years or buying a $3-4K machine right off the bat that could out classed in a couple years by a new SSE string?

The same philosophy against SLI applies here.

Add^

SLI philosophy in case you don't know, those two gpus wane in performance against new gpu technology. You can have two SM3 gpus giving you 60FPS but you can't run that SM4 or SM5 game. Not to mention, the cost of 1000W + PSU's is the biggest waste of money since Jenny Craig.

Mostly pointless though, at least for now...

I don't think any games would even be able to take advantage of this? The most you can hope, is that you could run a good game, at the same time as running a CPU intensive process at the same time, with little/no effect on the game performance...You'd need a lot of Ram to do that anyhow >_>

How many people would really do that?

Goddamn...that is some processing power, regardless if it is needed or not! I needs me one of these.

1000W Power Supply to run???? That is totally absurd for ordinary money savers. God damn Intel!!!! They still don't understand what people want in the 21st century.

I suppose, Intel is promoting global warming through higher electricity consumption!!!

Above all, definitely not environmentally friendly!!

Al Gore should talk to Bill Gates about this motherboard ASAP!!!

What does Bill Gates have to do with Intel?

THM, Al gore is a blow hard who probably cause globabl warming with all his hot air. >_> Besides, a 1KW power supply is that bad. It is the same as one of those cars they keep pushing.

imajoe56, you are also right!!!

Even the Jesus does not have the exact answer for the Global Warming!!!

A server part renamed / rebranded as a consumer part smashing benchmarks. Not entirely suprising really. But for those who have been power users on Socket 771, this probably wont be as impressive as they hope it to end up given that they'll be getting absurdly high figures off their rigs already.
