Sales momentum continued after the first weeks of outselling the Wii, but can Sony make it last until the end of this year?
Publisher Enterbrain's collation of their weekly sales data thus far reveal that sales for Sony's PlayStation 3 have managed to top Nintendo's Wii in Japan for the four weeks leading to November 25th. Essentially this means the PS3 can enjoy at least month since its launch in Japan where its sales topped the previously top-selling Wii, in this case 183,217 consoles versus 159,193 respecively.
Despite the change in fortune for the PS3, analysts remain cautious over whether or not celebrations will be in order at Sony's gaming division before the year is through.
"Overseas, I don't really see the PS3 doing that much at Christmas time primarily because it's still more expensive than the other machines and has less software," KBC Securities analyst Hiroshi Kamide said."It's nice to see the system selling much better than six months ago. But is it a sustainable trend? Is it going to really escalate from here? I'm not so sure."
The boost in PS3 sales for Japan is attributed to a number of factors including the recent release of Koei's latest Dynasty Warriors game (Shin Sangoku Musou 5), and of course a price cut for the console itself.
