Band 'The Romantics' sue makers of Guitar Hero

What I like about you? You really know how to sue.

You probably have not heard of the band 'The Romantics.' They were pretty popular about 20 years ago, in the early eighties. However, if you enjoy classic rock, or have played Guitar Hero much, you probably might be familiar with the bands most memorable hit songs "What I Like About You [you really know how to dance]" and "Talking In Your Sleep."

Anyways, these romantic guys are suing Activision, over Guitar Hero. The beef is over the inclusion of a cover version of the "What I Like About You" song. Due to the difficulty and cost associated with licensing songs, Guitar Hero I and II (but not so much III, from what I've heard) pay money to feature many 'tribute', or cover versions, of hit songs. The songs are the same songs as the original classics, but sung by different bands.

The Romantics' issue with Activision is that the cover version of their song in Guitar Hero is "virtually indistinguishable" from their own, and that this may confuse people trying to track down a CD with the original, Romantics version of the song.

The Romantics hope to stop the sale of Guitar Hero, in addition to receiving bag loads of money, for compensation.

on gamegrep i was reading the story they had turns out that the band has successfully seued companies for using it in comercials her is the quote

Gamegrep story-

Activision and Wavegroup Sound, the publisher and sound recorder for the massive hit game Guitar Hero, have been sued by The Romantics for a cover recording of the band's song.

The 1980s-era Detroit-based rock band claims the cover for "What I like About You" bears too much similarity to the original.

While the in-game usage was obtained by permission, the rock group has successfully sued over the song's use in television commercials in the past.

Band singer Wally Palmer pronounced himself "very upset" at the game's inclusion of the song. The Romantics spent years perfecting a "distinctive sound," he said.

The group's attorney, William Horton, honed in on the game's massive sales and expected revenue.

"The sales of this game are huge," he said. "We're all for good commerce. We just want to share in it."

Dead and Rotting

The Romantics were a crummy band with two okay songs, the rest was rubbish. IMNTBHO, I thought everything they came up with was garbage. I really believed these guys were dead by now.

Romantics - Do our song on Guitar Hero!!!
Romantics - Oh no, it's too good
Romantics - We gonna sue your asses >

Dear Romantics, please return to your graves and continue rotting.

If the Romantics were here right now in our Neoseeker office I'd say, "Look guys, cut the hair, spend less time in court, and more time writing new songs."

But they'd probably ignore me. Oh well.

All this is is some washed up band that was horrible in the first place, trying to get money and semi-fame from a huge craze in current day.

They think, if we sue these guys then come out with a horrible comeback record, people might buy the pile of garbage!

Yeah cuz it's so hard to play "What I like about you" as good if not better than these guys. And forgive my ignorance, but isn't the point to sound like the original recording artist?

LOL - sounds too similar! That song is probably the easiest song in the world to play (talk to any guitar hack). Distinct sound my ass! You can't play it any differently! Thats why they sucked!

These guys are just wash outs looking for a quick buck.
