New Imac's
William Henning - Wednesday, August 8th, 2007 | 11:54AM (PT)

Apple releases new lineup of computers

Apple released a whole new lineup today.

The new Imac's are faster and thinner, and the smallest screen offered is 20.1" - so they are a better deal.

Fortunately the rumour's of the Mac Mini's demise were greatly mistaken, and the Mini's were refreshed with higher speed Core 2 Duo processors, larger hard drives, and more memory - a welcome upgrade, even if I just bought a Core Duo 1.66GHz Mini a couple of months ago.

The new finish is aluminium, the glossy white look is gone; and the all-in-one's now look like a thin, classy 20.1" or 24" monitor, with a 2GHz or 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo processor under the hood.

The graphics options are still lackluster, but as Mac's are not gaming machines, the Radeon HD 2400XT / Radeon HD 2600 Pro are more than adequate. Mind you, if Apple wants to go after the gamer market, they will have to offer better graphics in the future.

iLife and iWork also got a facelift.

Don't know why anyone would feel the need to buy one now unless they give a free upgrade to OS X Leopard.

Is it me or does the new design remind us a little too much like the iTunes skin?

By the time you reduce an entire computer into just a flat-panel monitor, there's really not much more you can do design wise.
