Silicon Knights sue Epic Games over Unreal Engine 3

Disagreement to be settled not with Lighting Guns, but in court

Silicon Knights sue Epic Games over Unreal Engine 3 Image 1

It seems like the folks at Silicon Knights are a little miffed with Epic Games.

Silicon Knights have been working on their new Xbox 360 science-fiction action-RPG Too Human since 1999. The title has evolved over the years, and is finally on the developmental home-stretch, with a tentative 2008 release date. All though exact figures have not been released, it could be possibly be the most expensive video game ever produced, with a budget between 80 and 100 million clams. The title is in a good position to be a blockbuster: Microsoft is hoping it'll have Halo-esque impact on the Xbox 360.

The lawsuit was announced, via press release, yesterday. The lawsuit boils down to this: Silicon Knights claim that Epic misled them about the wonderfulness of the Unreal Engine (3). The Knights claim that Epic used licensing fees to improve and develop their own version of the Unreal engine for Gears of War. The version of the Unreal Engine that the Silicon Knights purchased license to, is inferior to the version Epic uses for their own products.

It appears that Silicon Knights had it with Unreal Engine 3, and have pretty much made their own engine for this great looking game.

Psssttt...ppssttt...hey, Silicon Knights, release a PC version of Too Human in 2008, okay? I'll buy *2* copies of the game if you do -- I promise.

Really not impressed. I've seen better action in Warhammer 40k intros. ;\

Kill the overhype before it even starts. To death with the media monster.

Ha ha ha! Yeah I'll bet the character in the trailer wishes he was an Imperial Space Marine, though admittedly he is a little too nimble to be one.

Hmm..really raijin? I thought this game looked pretty solid. Not cool enough to make me run out and buy an xbox, but pretty good..oh well. To each their own [games], I always say.

Put it this way, in comparison to the old and newer MGS4 trailer, the announcement on the budget for this game really really really seems just ridiculous.

Now, with a budget like that, you can rest assured that Microsoft has absolutely no choice BUT to turn this into a media eating monster. It's (as Mr.Jong says) "inevitabew".

Oh yeah, the Imp' Space Marines looks cool... but they always seem to go for the "just got gloriously slaughtered in the intro" approach. Which I have to say, does work its charm. Plus, I actually haven't seen that new MGS4 trailer. I saw a GIF of Raiden completely owning Vamp, and am downloading that chit' in HD right now. I hear it owns all kinds of goodness though, if that gif is any proof.
