Trying to stave potential Wii shortages with "plentiful" stock
Nintendo appears to be expecting strong production numbers for the Wii, thanks to the console's lack of reliance on next-generation hardware components in general. In fact, Nintendo of Canada's VP and general manager Ron Bertram is confident his company will have no less than one million consoles ready for North America alone by November 19th:
"We're looking at a million for North America at launch. If we get what we're supposed to get, this will be our most plentiful launch in the fifteen years I've been at Nintendo. All signs are actually extremely positive."Sony is trying to do what they're trying to do - they're trying to rule the entertainment universe with this very expensive machine. And we're just trying to get more people playing video games and the people who are playing video games playing our system. We knew they were on the 17th but that really wasn't a big concern for us."
For comparison, NPD Group sales data estimated Microsoft shifted approximately 326,000 Xbox 360 consoles in North America during its first month. Sony meanwhile has already
announced it would prepare 400,000 consoles for its North American PS3 launch later this year.
