nForce 4 BIOS update to make 820D work?
William Henning - Wednesday, August 3rd, 2005 | 2:44PM (PT)

There is a reported BIOS upgrade in the works to allow using dual core 820 chips on nForce boards

Geez.

Will they make up their minds?

I never quite believed that the 820 could not be made to work on nForce 4 Intel boards; as a matter of fact I tried it, and scrambled the CMOS on a nice Gigabyte board (no, it would not even POST) - I mean it did not make sense that the 830 and 840 are going to be supported, but not the 820.

Today we gat word that some nVidia spokesmen say that a BIOS update will allow the use of the 820 on nForce 4 nVidia boards. All I can say is... GIVE US THAT BIOS!

Technically the only reason I could think of it not working was greater FSB loading due to two cores, however it may be possible to compensate for that by increasing the drive strength. Who knows. All I know is I'd love to be able to play with the lower cost 820's on nForce boards.

I wonder how long before some enterprising motherboard manufacturers start releasing low cost Via / SiS and even Intel 915 based boards that support the 820D?

It would be nice if ATI chipsets also started to work with the 820...
