New Alderwood chipset aimed at high-end enthusiast market thanks to it high-end features... and price
DigiTimes discovers that Intel earlier this week updated their chipset roadmap with a new Grantsdale family chipset currently known as the "Alderwood". According to the roadmap, this new Alderwood chipset is intended to be the successor of the current 875P, otherwise known as the Canterwood. More details on the Alderwood:
"The new chipset will be available in the second quarter of next year. It will support an 800MHz FSB (front-side bus) and DDR2 dual-channel memory, in common with the 875P.Intel launched the 875P in April. The chipset is the company’s most expensive desktop chipset to date, priced at US$53 for a version with integrated software RAID and US$50 for a non-RAID version. The FOB (free on board) price of an 875P motherboard is over US$150 per unit, with some priced at over US$200.
"
With feature support and pricing like that it's no surprise that the article strongly feels Intel will gear this new chipset towards motherboards for the high-end enthusiast market.
