At CeBIT today, AMD boosted competition in the notebook PC industry by introducing 12 new mobile processors for thin-and-light and highperformance notebooks. AMD partnered with leading notebook manufacturers such as EPSON DIRECT, Fujitsu Siemens Computers Consumer Division and Sharp Corporation to deliver on-the-go productivity and extended battery life for virtually all major notebook categories.

AMD Processors for Thin-and-Light Notebooks
AMD is introducing the low-voltage mobile AMD Athlon XP-M processors 1800+, 1700+, 1600+, 1500+ and 1400+ with micro PGA packaging for the thin-and-light notebook market. This marks the first time AMD mobile processors will be featured in thin-and-light notebooks weighing less than four pounds, providing outstanding portability and extended system battery life for end users.

AOpen Inc. announced today that it is following the overwhelming success of its introduction of the world's first vacuum tube motherboard with a new series of Tube boards, coinciding with Intel's announcement of the Pentium 4 845GE/PE chipset.
AOpen's original Tube Motherboard - acknowledged by the company to be a unique and somewhat pricey "luxury" board - redefined the meaning of high performance and proved, to doubters across a number of industries, that there is indeed a place for the old with the new. Taking this concept one step further, AOpen's new Tube series brings all of the merits of the first Tube Motherboard to the table, but with a series of boards that have significant improvements and refinements, at a more affordable cost.
Taking an Unusual Idea and Making it Mainstream
Although the initial idea of marrying an analog audio tube with a digital motherboard had its roots in a somewhat offbeat discussion among some AOpen engineers, the merits of the idea have been eagerly embraced by editors and experts around the world. "I think its kind of a fascinating idea" said Patrick Norton of TechTV's popular program The Screen Savers in a recent segment broadcast on national cable television. Other experts and editors have voiced similar comments, but the underlying message is consistent - the notion of combining analog and digital technology is not a gimmick - it's a reality. "Both the new AXGE and PE Tube Motherboards possess the sonic characteristics of resolution that the original AX4B-533 Tube possessed, but with a detailed openness, a bright and clean treble - all enhanced by rounder and bouncier bass," says Al Peng, product manager at AOpen, Inc., and the mastermind behind AOpen's Tube.
Increasing Quality While Reducing Cost
Just like the original AX4B-533 Tube, the new series adheres to the premise that the vacuum tube circuits should be kept as simple as possible. And, just like the AX4B-533, the new series works its "magic" with a single Sovtek 6922 dual triode, sitting in the center of the amplification circuitry. AOpen's engineers carefully evaluated this design approach, and concluded that it is still the most desirable blueprint for the new generation of Tube motherboards. And, after exhausting research and testing, these same engineers came up with a number of complementing design improvements that add even more presence to the sound emanating from this unusual hybrid. According to Peng, "Affordability is a challenge we faced after releasing the AX4B-533 Tube. Since we do not believe in skimping on the design or materials, we found ways to make sure that the new AX4GE/PE Tube series has even more highly regarded brand name components than its predecessor, at a reduced price point."
Making A Good Thing Even Better
The new AX4GE/PE Tubes have no 6.3mm earphone jack to improve frequency response retention and simplify the wiring and board layout. SPDIF has also been eliminated to further simplify and improve sound quality.
Paralleled coupling by-pass circuitry has been deployed to the output stage to achieve a more desirable tonality and balance of the overall frequency spectrum. This allows for low, mid and high frequency characteristics to be achieved with a fuller body of musical engagement, spatial presentation and a fluid and smooth mid-range complemented by a clean high and a bouncy, well textured bass.
The audio portion of the PCB planes are now separated to help eliminate noise and unwanted frequencies that may enter the amplification circuit. This enhances the distribution of power and keeps the current paths as short as possible. Power, ground and signal planes are routed via an optimum path without crosstalk or interference, to retain audio purity and faithful reproduction of music.
The Tube series uses the WIMA MKP10 Series of polypropylene capacitors, designed specifically for audio applications and packed in a small rectangular case, sealed with epoxy. The WIMA MKP10 Series works well representing the full spectrum of frequencies, reducing the "grain" and "edge" in the mid-range and rounding-out the bass with a textured power and authority.
The WIMA MKS2 Series capacitor is also deployed because of its size advantages as well as its sonic characteristics for the input coupling.
In addition, Multicap's PPFX Series capacitor is strategically deployed to work with the WIMA MKP10 capacitor to create the ultimate in sound quality. The highs are smooth and clear, without harsh brassiness or dulling roll-off, while the mid-range is focused and filled with emotion when driven by a source bearing such characteristics. 3-D sound staging is also well presented, with a tight bass, bearing texture, power and authority.
Ultra-precision 1% tolerance, low-noise metal film resistors are deployed in the critical signal path, ensuring that sound degradation does not occur between the Tube Motherboard and the output speakers. Some of the DIP-type resistors have also been changed to SMT-type for a cleaner layout that is also more visually appealing.
With the new Tube series, two kinds of chassis wires work in tandem to bring together the best of both worlds, retaining overall sound quality in the process. Once again, Cardas wire is AOpen's favorite for its transparency and faithful reproduction characteristics. And, Kimber Kable chassis wire is also used to faithfully transfer audio signals from input.
WBT - the world's best connector company continues to produce connectors specifically for the high-end audio industry. WBT connectors are used throughout the new Tube series. The WBT RCA connector bracket is an optional accessory for the Tube and may be ordered through any authorized AOpen dealer.
In addition to the Intel 845 GE/PE chipset advantages, both tube models are reinforced by an ATA 133 IDE interface as well as Serial ATA for the next generation of hard drive standards that outperform today's ATA. Both ATA133 and Serial ATA serve to bridge the gap when migration occurs.

Corsair Memory, Inc. has announced that it is now offering two new eXtreme Memory Speed ("XMS") modules tailored specifically for ultra-performance computing enthusiasts.

"There will be four versions -- two graphic ones, called Nforce 2 GT uses Nvidia APU and its sound storm compatible featuring Nvidia and or 3com network card, USB 2.0 ATA 133 and Firewire, and Geforce 4 integrated plus AGP 8X slot with 128 bit DDR 400 memory support and FSB 266, 333 FSB support.
Nforce 2 G is the version that uses only AC97 audio capabilities featuring Nvidia's network card, USB 2.0 and ATA 133, Geforce 4 integrated plus AGP 8X slot with 128 bit DDR 400 memory and FSB 266, 333 FSB support.
With the non-integrated versions, the Nforce 2 ST uses Nvidia APU and it is sound storm compatible featuring Nvidia and or 3com network card, USB 2.0 ATA 133 and Firewire, and AGP 8X slot with 128 bit DDR 400 memory support and FSB 266, 333 FSB support. Hewlett-Packard (Canada) Ltd. today announced two new scanners, an 8x optical zoom digital camera and a compact photo printer that provide simple and innovative ways to capture, print, share and receive digital images.
Bringing electronic organization to shoeboxes full of photos, the HP Scanjet 5500c scanner allows users to scan a stack of up to 24 photos, the same number of photos in a typical roll of film, by simply placing them in the feeder and pressing a single button. Users also can view scanned images in about seven seconds(1) -- no warm-up time required.
Three other products join HP's line of digital imaging products, including the HP Scanjet 4570c scanner; the HP Photosmart 230 photo printer -- featuring a convenient LCD screen for previewing and editing photos prior to printing; and the HP Photosmart 850 digital camera with manual controls and HP Instant Share technology.

The digital camera produces outstanding close-ups and brilliant photos, featuring 4.1-megapixel total resolution and 56x total zoom (8x optical, 7x digital). The electronic viewfinder enables consumers to enhance the framing of photos through the lens viewing.
The digital camera also features HP Instant Share technology, which allows users to snap a photo and then select on the camera where the photo will go the next time the camera is connected to a computer or optional HP Photosmart 8881 digital camera dock.
All of the new products introduced today include HP photo and imaging software, which allows users to conveniently and easily edit, create and print photos, including photo album pages.
Price and Availability
The HP Scanjet 5500c scanner, HP Scanjet 4570c scanner, HP Photosmart 230 photo printer and HP Photosmart 850 digital camera are expected to begin shipping in early October. All products will be available at authorized HP retailers nationwide.

Logitech, today introduced the MX Series of Performance Mice. Designed for the most demanding of conditions, these three new mice from Logitech are engineered to provide advanced precision and control.
The MX700 has a new comfortable contoured right-handed shape with a continuous key plate and eight programmable navigation buttons. The mouse is painted with a blue/black surface and has highly polished silver accents. Now available for $79.95 USD.

Intel Corporation today unveiled the latest addition to its embedded processor roadmap -- the Low Voltage Intel(R) Pentium(R) III processor at 933 MHz -- for use by communications equipment manufacturers in high-density blade systems.
The processor is featured on the high-density, single-slot Intel NetStructure(TM) ZT 5524 System Master Processor Board which is available in either single or dual-processor configurations. The ZT 5524 is a PCI Industrial Manufacturers Group(a) (PICMG) 2.16-compliant packet-switched board and offers communication equipment manufactures redundant host support, providing high performance coupled with high availability.
With dual Gigabit Ethernet ports and an optional dual PMC mezzanine, the ZT 5524 is designed specifically for telecom servers, broadband access servers, telecom switches and mobile base station controllers. Intel is also offering board vendors, at no cost, the schematics for building a standards-based PICMG 2.16-compliant board with a Low Voltage Intel Pentium III processor.

Capable of running embedded applications such as security, telephony, storage and wireless base station controllers, the Low Voltage Intel Pentium III processor has a maximum power dissipation of 12.2 watts. The lower wattage enables the processor to decrease the overall thermal dissipation of the system so that it can operate under restricted heat and space constraints. Like all processors in Intel's embedded processor family, the Low Voltage Intel Pentium III processor comes with extended product lifecycle support.
The Low Voltage Intel Pentium III processor contains 512 KB of on-chip level two cache memory and supports a 133 MHz system bus. The processor is produced on Intel's 0.13-micron manufacturing process, an advanced process that enables lower voltages. The processor is validated with the Intel 815E2 chipset, and can be configured with third-party chipsets for dual-processing implementations.
The Low Voltage Intel Pentium III processor at 933 MHz is available now from Intel for $273 in one-thousand unit quantities. The ZT 5524 is available from Intel for $2,695. In addition, boards in PICMG 2.16 and other form factors featuring the Low Voltage Intel Pentium III processor are now available from AAEON, Advantech, Kontron and other major OEMs. Boards from Force Computers will be available later this year. System pricing varies by manufacturer.
