The PS4 will be release whenever the Xbox720 (Phonenix) will be released/ Sony can't afford that. Most likely the PS4 will have a very similar architeture as the PS3 with obviously more RAM.

The reason why they are working on the PS4 now, is because of the threat of the Xbox720 coming out before the PS4 so they want to be ready.

Instead of spending precious time creating a new chip, they will use a modified version of their existing hardware. Plus, they will use this time to test their product so that it will not break like the dreaded RROD.

So even if the PS3 only last eight years, it's still a far better built system with more bang for the buck.

I agreed with VinTheDean. Great comment!!!!

Anyhow, Sony's PS3 will definitely last longer than Xbox 360 which is rumoured to be disappeared by the end of 2011 according to some Microsoft's news.

Remember David Reeves is not a main figure in Sony overall, he has a right to say whatever he wants, but the one who controls PS3's future is Kaz Hirai who unmistakably stated that 10 years plan is solid base of Sony's marketing and manufacturing plan.

Ultimately, If PS2 has more than 8 years!!! Why not PS3???

Yeah. If it's any less than that, I won't be able to afford the following console. Hell, the fact that the life-span of the PS2 and xbox was shorter than every other console put me at a serious disadvantage, leaving me waiting until 2007 or 2008 to purchase a next-gen console; there was also a good chance of me not getting any at all.

Yeah...games don't need much more processing speed. I expect the new Playstation will just be a more efficient version of the cell with more RAM and a beefier GPU, and a renovated operating system and online functionality, seeing as that worked so well for the 360...
Anyways, they don't need to make a new system for awhile if they can release cheap dev tools to help developers get around the memory architecture without having to rewrite their old game engines.

The PS4 will be nothing like the PS3. Intel have won the contract for the PS4 and it will be based on Intel's new GPU/CPU combination. It will most probably be very formiddable. ATI have taken contract of the new XBox720 and the next gen Wii. nVidia on the other hand have been left out in the cold.
