Battle of the franchises
Watch out GameStop/EB Games, a new gaming retailer is on the scene in Canada: Gamer Doc. The until-now U.S.-only retailer announced today the opening of its first store in the country, "where the entire family can come in and have fun shopping for their favorite Xbox 360, Wii and PlayStation 3 video games, accessories and more."
Frank Bajc and his son James are the folks taking on the job, both Area Developers for the Greater Toronto Area, with this first shop opening in Burlington, a town about 60km outside city center Toronto. The two plan on opening more stores in their area over the next five years."Our expansion into Canada is very exciting, and we believe that Gamer Doc will be a big hit with gamers of all ages in Burlington," said Jim Belanger, president of Gamer Doc. "Frank and James bring a strong retail background to the team and we look forward to great success."
"The Gamer Doc store design is inviting to all gamers, from hardcore enthusiasts to casual players and those who are new to gaming," Frank said. "Our Gamer Centers for Xbox 360, Wii and PlayStation 3 make it easy for customers to come in and find the consoles, games and accessories they want. People who just want to come in and pick-up, pre-order or rent a game can be in and out very quickly, while those who want to browse or ask questions can take as much time as they like. We are here to make sure that shopping at Gamer Doc is an enjoyable experience and that our customers come back to see us for all of their gaming needs."
"Video games are quickly becoming the most popular form of entertainment for young people, moms and dads, and even senior citizens, and we are happy to answer questions, talk about their favorite games and introduce them to new ones," James said. "Gamer Doc is more than a video game store; it is an entertainment center. We also sell flat-panel HD monitors and cables, and are happy to show our customers how to hook-up their systems for optimum game play."

The big chain stores here are just terrible. They never have any idea even when they are due to get products -- games come out so much later here, and the dudes at the stores have no idea what is going on.
For a laugh check out www.ebgames.ca . The website is pathetic! They have a grand total of ---5--- PC games listed on their entire website. Compare it to www.ebgames.com. Such a joke. Ebgames.ca is so bad, I could make a more informative in between the time I shave and comb my hair in the mornings.
GameStop/EB is hopeless because it's not run by anyone who cares about games. Even the sales people aren't hired because they are gamers (and many of them don't know shit -- I cringed hearing one of their employees trying to describe a game to a customer the other week). I know this because I was interviewed once by them; they would take someone who can hock shit like crazy over someone who is just a good employee and loves games any day.
If anyone has been to a Microplay by chance -- that's the ideal game chain in my opinion. For years I thought it was independent, because that's how it runs, despite being in various places across Canada. They actually give a crap about games, which is better for everyone. They're not rich like GameStop/EB is, but who needs to be?
You can tell by the prefix 'micro' that they have been around a long time. I'd be happy to hear that they are still in business; the shop I went to was great...
Look, their website actually doesnt suck:
http://www.microplay.com/
No PC section though -- very depressing. I know they have lots of PC games in their outlets though.
Sounds pretty good.
Though the EBs near me (two of them within easy walking distance of eachother >_>) are plenty good IMO. Our gamestop sucks (though they offer stuff EB doesn't, like [expensive] cosplay, re-sale trading cards, action figures, and TCG tournaments).
