German publication targets violent video games

David Ziegler, a German gamer, brings news of an anti-game violence paper composed by a coalition of German citizens.

It's being called the "Cologne Declaration" and was issued after the German Culture Council recognized video games as a "cultural asset."  The Declaration presents a familiar argument by stating that violent video games are harmful to children and to "the building of a peaceful society."  A few prominent German social scientists are backing these claims as well.

CounterStrike, DOOM 3, Crysis, Call of Duty 4, and Grand Theft Auto IV (duh) were all cited as "killer games" and "landminds for the soul."  The paper suggests another reoccuring notion -- that the U.S. military is developing these shooting games in order to condition recruits into killers.  Going even further, the Cologne Declaration says that violent games are being used to bolster the "military-industrial-media complex."

Researchers or scientists who oppose the document by defending these violent games are accused of being "collaborators and accomplices" of the video game industry.  The Declaration not only demands that the German government withdraw state support for game development, it also calls for a complete ban on violent games, proudly declaring:

"We won't allow our children to be turned into killing machines on real and virtual battlefields."

It is particularly surprising that whoever wrote that article didn't seem to notice the US Army game, America's Army, which is basically a recruiting tool for the Army.

It also seems kind of weird that CounterStrike, DOOM 3, Crysis, Call of Duty 4, and Grand Theft Auto IV, which are all really popular in Germany, are somehow solely American efforts to condition killers. In other words, I'm sure those games would have the same effect on Germans if that were the case, so why would America be helping out the rest of the world, instead of only their own potential troops, if that was the case? (Which I don't think it is.)

America's Army is the only game that fits their end result.... The army sent me like 5 copies of the freakin' thing after they forced us to give them our info while taking their stupid freakin' test in school. I was in the top 5th percent of my grade.... Yeah....

    I am from Germany.
It really is a horrible Situation. For Years a group of Politicans have run a campagain against "killer games".

At a time they even wanted to punish people for playing/owning games with a year or two spending in Prision.

By the way Merry Christmas everyone. :-)

People just can't seem to accept that killing in video games is as natural as rain. It's going to happen and I'm sure it can't be stopped anytime soon.

These guys sound absolutely fascist. I hope your government doesn't give in to their demands! Some U.S. politicians go after violent games too, but we generally don't listen to them. :3

    Also, LOL @Keefah
