November 2008 most profitable month for EU sales
We know Black Friday isn't a European retail tradition, but along with positive performance reports from the post-Thanksgiving madness, Microsoft announced the Xbox 360's overwhelming success in Europe as well.
It looks like those price cuts helped because Microsoft is now saying that November proved to be the biggest sales month for European sales, outselling the PlayStation 3 across the region. France, Spain, and Italy are gradually being won over as well.
"November was a very significant milestone for Xbox -- we sold the most consoles ever in our history in Europe, and are outselling PlayStation 3 week-on-week across Europe," boasted Chris Lewis, who is the Xbox EMEA ("Europe, Middle East, and Africa") Regional VP.
Data from GfK Chart-Track appear to back his claim, showing a 124 percent increase in Xbox 360 sales over the same period in 2007. On the other hand, the Wii saw a 3 percent rise while the PlayStation 3 gained 43 percent.
"Our strong partnerships with retail and with publishers have played a big role in this success," he noted. "We are working closely with retail to ensure a steady supply of consoles throughout the Christmas season, and third-party games have been selling well on the Xbox 360 platform and providing great choice for consumers."
Lewis has no doubt that the September price cuts played a heavy part in swaying European consumers. If all goes well, this holiday season should prove profitable for Microsoft.
*cough*
On another note, I did enjoy the last ine of the article.
