Welcome to the Games for Windows LIVE Marketplace
Sean Ridgeley - Thursday, December 4th, 2008 | 11:11AM (PT)

GfW 2.0 client released

Microsoft wasn't all talk last month when it said it would be putting more resources into its Games for Windows (GfW) service -- looks like they're now trying to compete with themselves, that is, the Xbox LIVE Marketplace, with the Games for Windows LIVE Marketplace.

To set this up and enable all the other new LIVE features, you simply have to install the new 2.0 client, a 30 MB download. Note that if you're an XP user (and bless your little heart), you'll have to download a hotfix (link) to get it running.

Content is scarce at the moment -- just a few trailers and a demo for Viva Pinata, but it's a start, yeah? For primarily PC gamers, this is a real treat, so let's hope it'll turn out to be at least comparably as fun as the Xbox LIVE Marketplace and all the other things the service offers.

If they keep this on the side as an alternative to hunting through Fileplanet, Filefront and etc for trailers and demos then I'm all for it, if they intend to flip this to go against Steam then I'd have to imagine they're going to be on a huge uphill battle.

Thats the plan apparently..I agree, I doubt they would do too well with it..unless the DRM was much less annoying or non-existent..I'd definitely use Live over Steam then, personally.

I'd only make the total jump if I could actually move my games around, having them licensed through steam isn't entirely bad as I've used it before to install games at remote locations without trouble. I think it would be a bit of a killer to start having my games camped out through GfW and Steam though >_< it's nice when everything is under one roof.

Yeah I know about that which is a very awesome feature. There's tons, it's just the DRM methods are a real dealbreaker for me.
