French game reviewer pans Fallout 3

Zut allors, la Fallout trois est terrible

French game reviewer pans Fallout 3 Image 1

Game reviewer Omar Boulon, from French gaming magazine CanardPC, was invited by Bethesda to check out their upcoming RPG Fallout 3. For sixteen hours he was holed up in a hotel, playing the game, getting a feel for it, for a review.

Omar really didn't like the game much at all, it seems.

In this month's edition of CanardPC (translation: PC Duck) Omar basically tears down the game in a large editorial piece. While not a review-review (he does not score the game), he offers many stinging criticisms on what he perceives to be the games short-comings.

Here is an excerpt:

" Fallout 3 is a sluggish device, soulless, not exactly terrible, actually almost enjoyable, but totally forgettable because of uncountable dishonest compromises.

From what I've seen, Fallout 3 does not have any of the qualities of the previous episodes. But that was to be expected. However, it has none of the diffuse magic of the Elder Scrolls series. It feels like Bethesda made a break with this new title, a sad bend towards products multiplying "fan service", the dumb, goofy stuff that will make the client laugh, the "awsum roxxorz" elements and micro-gameplay to the detriment of world coherence and deeper mechanisms. To sum it all up, expect loads of shallow combat spoiled by VATS and slowmotion sequences as gore as pathetic, a terribly short main quest - a Spanish colleague has finished it in less than an afternoon, during his first playthrough - nice secondary quests, but which completely missed the intelligence and density of the series, the whole being flavored with failed occasions."

Mr. Boulon goes on to describe failings of Fallout 3 that were found in the game's engine predecessor, Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. "Most locations you can discover are "raider dungeons". City ruins are copy-paste of the same and only model, here and there flavored by the same and only model of tricycle (the very poetic "Red Ryder") and even worse, the main quest will get you through an Hellgate London-ish nightmare in which you had to pass through kilometers of underground for hours and hours."

Unfortunately the editorial does not get much better. Echoing comments made by another French reviewer in PcJeux, the wasteland of Fallout 3 doesn't seem to be much of a wasteland at all -- it is crowded with all sorts of setup situations waiting for an adventure to trounce through: " Besides the cardboard sets, the feeling of emptiness suddenly goes away. Just like in Oblivion and Gothic 3, adventure awaits at every corner of the street. Literally, unfortunately. A two minute walk and you're there"

Omar didn't give the game a overall score. So far, two other reviews have come out. A PC Gamer UK gave the game a 81%, and PC Jeux settled on a much higher 93%.

From this harsh preview-review, going to PC Jeux' 93%, it seems difficult to guess what the average critical consensus on the game will be. From these early reviews, it does seem however that for those that played the earlier games in the series, Fallout 3's RPG elements and immersive qualities are lacking. As for how gamers who haven't played Fallout 1 & 2 see Fallout 3, well, we will just have to wait to see more reviews -- or for October 28th, when everyone will be able to check it for themselves.

I want to see a review from a more prominent source. Like Game Informer or EGM.

I want the review results from UK's PLAY Magazine as well as from PS3 IGN.

CanardPC has a good reputation in France (from what I've read in forums.)

I'm really interested to see the how the onslaught of reviews will be as well. I'm going to *guess* that the average will be in the high eighties, that they'll be a decent amount of reviews giving the game a score in the nineties, and a smaller handful scoring the game in the seventies.

When Oblivion came out, a good part of the reason why it received such awesome reviews was that engine was 'next-gen.' Fallout 3 uses the same engine, so it might appear a bit dated graphically to some, from what I've seen. This will hurt ratings a bit...

Time will tell.

I believe it's "trois" for three, not "trios". You said "Fallout 3 trios" instead of "Fallout 3".

I want the game to be reviewed by a person who HASN'T played the first 2 fallouts. Because about 90% of the people who are gonna buy this wont have played the first 2.

I'm sort of in the camp that thinks that this game shouldn't have been called Fallout 3 -- besides the setting, it has extremely little gameplay similarities to Fallout 1 +2. Your right, those games are pretty old (10 years), many people haven't even played them... it is probably better if the reviewers haven't played the original games, because for those reviewers that have, they seem to keep on seeing the shortcomings in Fallout 3 that aren't necessarily shortcomings at all, but just different design philosophies.

New review from Polish Click! magazine gives Fallout 3 a 8.75 / 10

"Fallout 3 is a game different from its great predecessor, but it doesn’t mean it’s worse. It’s just a continuation of the series adjusted to an entirely new age of interactive entertainment - fortunately, it keeps the atmosphere of the originals. Despite minor flaws, it is a strong contender for being the RPG of the year!

Just to say a point : Canard PC is one of the last independant magazines in France as all are in the hands of two press groups.
Canard PC members were the old Joystick Crew who quit the magazine to remain independant when it was bought.

They have a writing style very special even in France for a video game mag so don't be too surprised when reading, but be sure that everything they say is true as they have no reason to kill the game or bethesda, as they liked Oblivion before and remain independant.

PC jeux is not independant and made a review even before the US mags, if you have to doubt about a magazine, it's them.

Bisous.

I did not play the first two.

But I hear they were about being "last man" on Earth scenario and it really felt isolated. In FO3 it seems like you're not the last one on Earth. Which kind of dilutes the experience. ey?

This is no surprise for anyone who has been following this story since Bethesda first acquired the rights to Fallout 3.

I trust the PC Gamer UK reviews generally, with 81% sounds like they probably think it was a good game but isn't as good as it could be.

The cover of the magazine states it is a preview not a review. Canard PC is a very respected bi monthly mag famous for its independence and its 30yo reviewers who are writing for adults. I personally love this mag for the quality of their writing. It is witty , intelligent and funny. Among the writers there is one who excels by his very humorous writing and metaphoric bashing of bad games. His name is Omar Boulon ( Omar Bolt) and he is the one who wrote that article. Canard PC said to have a bad feeling about the game since E3. The cover of the current issue says "Fallout 3: we believed in it, but it is over." Well... now I am crossing my finger for far cry 2

Same here. I have a feeling I'm going to love Far Cry 2, and I'm going to be disappointed with Fallout 3. I'm huge fans of Fallout 1 + 2, but of course, Fallout 3 doesn't have much in common at all with those games, in terms of gameplay and RPG depth (from what I can tell-- I haven't played it yet, of course.)

I'm not going to buy Fallout 3 anymore... I think I'm going to wait and see if Bethesda releases a SDK for it. If mods are not coming out for the game, I'm not going to get it. There is just too many good games out there, and not enough time -- I have to be very selective.
