Halo 3 Recon was officially announced by Microsoft at the Tokyo Game Show, and long time series developer Bungie remains at the production reins. However, the studio notes that Recon will be their final project in the franchise trilogy. Once Recon is done and dusted, Bungie won't be producing further Halo titles. The studio will continue to provide technical support for their Halo titles when needed, of course. According to Bungie's community and PR director Brian Jarrard:
I think when this project wraps up in a couple of months that will be the time when that team moves on to something else - part of that team will move on to something else and part of them will probably be absorbed into one of the other projects that are already on the way.
Scheduled for release next Fall, Recon the official stand-alone expansion for the wildly popular Xbox 360 shooter, Halo 3.
