'Stoked' for the environment
God of War creator David Jaffe has announced he won't be leaving his desk for GameCity 3, that videogame festival in Nottingham, UK taking place this October 30-November 1. Instead, he'll be participating from his desk via videolink. This is the first in a 'series of events' the GameCity people are calling "From the Desk of..." which will be held there.
So why all this? Jaffe says it's all for the environment, as planes mark a massive contribution to this whole carbon emissions thing.
"I'm really ****ing stoked. I've been working for a long-time on ways to keep up on festival appearances, whilst still doing my bit for the environment. This is a great opportunity for me to remain essentially stationary, meet the GameCity festival crowd AND reduce my carbon footprint..." he uttered.
On a related note, it is important to know methane is a far bigger threat to that ol' global warming dealy, 23 times as harmful as carbon dioxide, and an even bigger contributor to the problem, largely propelled by animal agriculture. Nevertheless, help is help, so props to Jaffe. I recall Radiohead doing something similar for a televised performance on some talk show a few months back for the same reason. If things keep heading this way, I'm wondering if we'll eventually just end up with everything being done by videolink. Friendly, sure, but freaky!
The announcement states he "will be appearing without the aid of a PR representative to answer ALL your questions after guiding us through his desktop." Folks, this is a very rare and maybe a little glorious treat. In my experience, interviewing someone even remotely 'big' incurs the interference in some way of a PR person. In short, it's just plain awkward to talk to them like a normal person knowing this PR guy/girl is there listening to your every word, making sure you don't ask anything offensive, and waiting to interject whenever necessary. No filter between the creators and question-askers is something I welcome, and I presume God of War fans will too (he's working on a new game by the way, so hopefully we'll have some details on that for you in the coming days).
Oh, and if you haven't yet seen Jaffe's response to the news of X-Men 3 director Brett Ratner directing the God of War movie, check it out:
He should have made a list of things to say, rather than going off topic for 30 seconds to talk about X-Men. But he seems cool. I'd have to agree with him, X-Men 3 was a pretty good movie, and I haven't heard much about what people on the internet think of it, but it was at least very action-y. If you think about the concept of God of War, and wrap it around the action of X-Men 3, you'll get a pretty cool movie.

This guy needs to work on his public speaking skills. He basically rambled for 7 minutes.
