No fans need apply
William Henning - Thursday, October 2nd, 2008 | 12:13PM (PT)

Don't like fans? No problem, as long as you REALLY like heatsinks...

I saw an outrageous case over at Gizmodo - this guy custom built a case for his computer out of aluminium heatsinks.

That's right, the whole case is a heatsink.

Copper heatpipes are used to transfer the heat from the heatsink on the processor, and everything is mounted on monstrous open air heatsinks. Cool to look at, and it would be quiet, but I bet its a dust magnet.

I think if he mounted a box fan on the side it would be good to go!

Pretty cool. Must be fun to overclock with!

I wish I could see some temp specs on this thing.

To tell you the truth, I don't think it would dissipate heat as well as you think.

I don't think it would spread heat either, its too solid and there's just not enough surface area, plus the heat isn't just going to spread throughout the entire aluminum case, he should have just made the area directly around the heat pipes out of thin bladed copper.

despite it is outright ridiculous, i like it

Lithium would work in dissipating the heat too, I think.

Not bad, reminds me of the idea behind the Zalman TNN line of cases to be completely fanless.

I was thinking the EXACT same thing hehe.

I'm not impressed.. Its pretty small, and I actually cant see that dissipating the heat very well. Hes only got 4 copper heat pipes to connect the processor to the sides of the heatsink, and I dont think the heat would spread evenly over the whole thing.

It would be interesting to see a temperature comparison between using that setup, and the stock heatsink/fan.
