Nintendo announces Nintendo DSi at 2008 Media Summit
Lydia Sung - Thursday, October 2nd, 2008 | 12:18AM (PT)

Iwata gives details on the DS Lite's direct successor

President and CEO of Nintendo Satoru Iwata has confirmed rumors of a new DS at the Nintendo Media Summit.  The new DS, now revealed to be the Nintendo DSi, will have additional features over the original DS Lite, among other modifications.

The DSi will have bigger screens, music playback functionality, two cameras, an SD card slot, and a new DS-specific download service.  What the DSi won't have is the DS Lite's GBA slot.  Here are the specifics:

  • Overall size of DSi has been reduced, making it 2.6 millimeters or 12 percent slimmer than the DS Lite.
  • Both screens expanded to 3.25 inches.
  • GBA slot removed -- phasing out old games, perhaps?
  • Includes two cameras: an external 0.3 Megapixel camera and VGA camera along the DSi's hinge, facing the user.  Images taken would be 640 x 480 pixel and can be edited via touchscreen.
  • Full music playback functionality with adjustable pitch and playback speed
  • SD memory card slot in addition to internal memory
  • Built-in Nintendo DS web browser
  • Ability to download games from DSWare, which uses Wii Points (or Nintendo Points); users will be given free 1,000 Nintendo Points upon first log-in.
  • DSWare comes in four price categories: free, 200, 500, and 800 Nintendo Points.
  • DSi will come in matte white or black -- no more fingerprint smudges!

The Nintendo DSi launches in Japan on November 1, 2008 with a pricetag of ¥18,900, or $179.  No release dates outside of Japan have been announced, but Nintendo has said the DSi will not be leaving Japan until some time in 2009.  These lovely pictures will have to do for now:

    Oh, hell yes!

I do wonder about the bigger screens, though. If the images are stretched that would cause some distortion, right? Even if the propotions are kept the same (though I suppose that would leave it less noticable). Would we have the option to play at the original sizes? I suppose it's possible that Nintendo already has it taken care of.

I doubt it would be as bad as you think.

If I wasn't told this was a new version, by looking at it I'd think it was the same. I knew they couldnt improve the look/size much, haha.

Anyway..this is annoying/awesome..it has basically everything I asked for! Guess I'll be trading up soon, probably next year..

Ha ha ha, yeah it's pretty much like what Apple is doing with its own hardware updates. But this actually looks pretty nifty, I certainly wouldn't mind giving it a try since the DS is pretty much what I play on a regular basis now.

All the built-in stuff this time around makes it especially convenient, and DSWare sounds interesting.

I don't know if this article says it or not, but it supposedly had TWO touch screens. It has been confirmed that is false though...

It's kinda cool. I'm really interested in the DSWare and the browser. Hope the internet is better than the Wii browser. I'm not too big on the camera, but I'm sure lots are. The loss of the GBA slot isn't too big a deal to me, since I still have an Advance, an SP, a DS, and a DS Lite. I don't know if I'd buy it or not, though. As for screen distortion, as long as the ratio is the same, it doesn't matter how big/small the screen is, and I don't think Nintendo would alter the ratio.

I don't plan to get rid of my DS Lite any time soon, but I am rather curious to see how the DSi turns out. Okay, obviously Nintendo is going to sell countless units until the shortages kick in, but the more features you add, the more bugs and kinks will show up. Personally, I'm glad it won't be hitting North America until 2009; if it's coming out for the holiday season, we may get a sneak peek at E3 or E For All.

Great...another thing to save money for. Considering I JUST got my DS. Anyway no GBA slot means no more old school pokemon.(Hey face it Pokemon is awesome.)

Well, Nice successor to DSLite but my question is, "How much is the internal memory of new DSi?" I hope if we want to store musics or photos, we'd better have over 2GB or above.

I also want to know whether it will be compatible with SD cards which have capacity of 4GB or over or not!!!

Someone in the forums brought up an interesting point...maybe GBA games will be downloadable. If thats the plan they shouldve announced it with this though, cause a nice bit of people seem pissed over it.

Seems like they are competing against the ipod touch. With the added music playability. I am actually dissapointed with the games on the DS lite (mine is sitting in dust), I guess i am sick of playing pokemon. The loss of GBA slot would be a downer for me, because one game I actually play rarely now and again is Metroid fusion. I think that's really the only mobile game I have truthfully enjoyed as much as a console or PC game. Pokemon was pretty fun too back in the day, it was nice to trade pokemon with other friends. But I am no longer a kid anymore and so pokemon has kind of lost a little bit of replayability.

I think a few simple games on an ipod touch (don't own one yet), like tetris or mahjong if they have it would be fine for me. (I know there's a huge price difference and they are both aimed at different crowds) I would probably be happy with a PSP but I don't think i would continue to use it for very long.

On another note is that camera comparable to cheaper cell phones with cameras?

id hardly say the micro was a flop. it had more of an underground audience. i know people went crazy for it at my school. most everyone had one. including me.

i think the DSI has a chance, more so than the micro. with the music and cameras, this should be good for nintendo
