Blockbuster has confirmed that the price of the 40GB Playstation is dropping to $360 USD this weekend -- a $40 reduction.

This comes on the heels of Microsoft cutting the cost of the Xbox about a month ago now. In addition, the 40GB model of the Playstation 3 is going to be phased out, for an upcoming 80G model to sell at $400 that was announced at E3.

It seems kinda stupid to only lower it 40 bucks when microsoft lowered the 360 80 dollars. But who knows what goes on in those idio....peoples heads.

Unfortunately for Sony, manufacturing prices are still high for them. MS pays much less to build consoles -- Sony sold PS3 at a big loss when they first came out, and its only sorta getting better now, after all this time.

Umm..., that's is a good omen, you know, sometimes, I can understand the reason of PS3 being expensive. Because it is a brand name or brand power from layman's point of view. What is more, If you look at other Sony's electrical products, they are usually or mostly more expensive than nearest rivals, Matsushita also known as Panasonic, Sharp, Pioneer and least well-known Sanyo.

The loss implies that they are making them for more than there being sold for, it has nothing with the brand name.

Right....lower the price a measly 40 bucks just to jack it back up to 400 again right? Sony can go fu-..... Wait, are their any fanboys around? Yes? Damn... Sony can go call their moms......

Yeah, I realize the 360 is doing this too, but they lowered it double that, which is not only going to get them off the shelves quicker, but it is going to allow people like me who don't have all that extra cash to throw around get one. Not to mention it's much lower price makes it a better choice in my opinion.

Eventually I will have all 3 consoles as I do now, and then Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo will pump out the "Next Gen" once again and the cycle will start all over.... Damn technology....

I honestly think the PS3 is an impressive piece of equipment, but Sony put too much into it without realizing that not everyone is going to put down the money on their console just because the PS2 was such a hit, and the PS3 is nice.

They can't lower their prices like Nintendo and Microsoft because they're ALREADY losing money on the PS3.... whereas Nintendo and Microsoft turn a profit with each console. I think the typical game plan for companies is losing money on consoles and then making a profit on the actual games. It's just troublesome for Sony right now... like someone said above, the cheaper parts Microsoft uses allows them to actually make money off the Xbox 360 (hence hardware issues).
