Online gaming shifting to consoles?

More console players than PC garnered by free online RPG

Online gaming shifting to consoles? Image 1

Warrior Quest is a charming RPG designed for casual and expanded audiences that revolves around card collection and turn based battles. Online leader boards allow gamers to submit their scores and see where they stand in the game’s worldwide rankings. The game [will have] premium content due for release in the coming months to further expand the gaming experience.

Warrior Quest is a free-to-play online RPG. Re-launched two weeks ago, its publisher is reporting the game's console audience has surpassed its 'already substantial' PC and Mac audience, a record for the game (sidenote: the URL has been changed to mikomi.info). PlayStation 3 gamers especially are into it, though Wii owners, who can also play via their console's Internet browser, make up a sizable portion of the console audience.

Now, I realize this is just one game, but it does speak volumes. Is this the beginning of a shift to console-based online RPGs? Sony has already said as such (for them anyway) - will developers and publishers alike take note of this and test the waters, too? Would you rather play online RPGs from your console than your PC these days? Why?

There are zounds and swarms of PC free-to-play online RPGs. The sales and revenues of these games are not known, because they are measured as much as console games are, but I don't think they either will trounce another.

But as of right now, free-to-play RPGS are far far far more prolific on the PC, as far as I am aware.

For instance, the popular Maple Story game has an estimated 50 million players. Which is incredibly way more than I imagine Warrior Quest has.

It would be nice to see some free to play rpgs on consoles, because that is one of those genres consoles have not used a lot.

I remember hearing (ages ago) about a PS3 Free to play RPG....I wonder if this is it? I was under the impression that the one I was thinking of, would be a PSN game.

So how well does this play via the PS3's browser? I've tried some flash games on the PS3, and it sucks >_>
