Blu-ray has five year shelf-life, says Samsung

One short little victory?

The Samsung Group, owners of Samsung Electronics, is the world's second largest conglomerate by revenue, and as such, a voice paid quite a bit of attention to. So, when Andy Griffiths, director of consumer electronics at Samsung UK says Blu-ray will be replaced in five years, you don't exactly brush it off:

"I think it [Blu-ray] has 5 years left, I certainly wouldn't give it 10", [he] told Pocket-lint in an interview.

Hoping to capitalise before it's too late, Griffiths believes that 2008 is the format's year.

"It's going to be huge. We are heavily back-ordered at the moment."

Griffths went on to talk about OLED overtaking LCD technology, and the future of how we take in our home media in general. He says in 2012 we will be "in a true HD world":

"Everything from your television to your camcorder will be offering you pictures in high-definition, and we plan to offer you that HD world from all angles."
If this is true, and Samsung isn't just blowing smoke, Blu-ray then, is technically going to start a decline sometime this year or next. And it was just getting started..

Digital media is happenning and has been for some time now! it`s just getting stronger every day and blu ray sales are still never going to catch dvd! I agree, in around 5 years, give or take a few, downloading will have taken off from blu ray so bad that it wont even matter, even sony is offering movie downloads via ps3? I know, the old "not everyone has high speed" theory will pop up here soon, but in 5 years everyone probably will have some sort of high speed offered. and hey if dvd is so old, how come we still use cd`s for music today? now you can download music and put them in your mp3 player and so will you do the same with your media, it`s just a matter of time.

"Evolution is the law of life".

    Pythagoras.

It does not surprise me to see something will succeed Blu-ray position in the future. Nevertheless, for the time being, I want to enjoy the latest technology, what if you die before 2012? Who knows? The most important thing is that to make the most out of it from current technology. Plus who knows what kinds of format will we be using in 2050? Yellow-ray???

Only the uneducated fools condemn the Blu-ray format, the main reason for them is either they lack money to buy Blu-ray players or they live under the rock with nothing in home, I suppose.

2012 is still four years away, even the waiting for four days seem like four centuries for me.

I don't see Bluray downloads doing good anytime soon. There are not enough FiOS or equal to faster internet connections offered to every body. Because cable or dsl is just not going to cut it for Bluray. Those movies are Ginormous in size.

According to Verizon, Fios should be available to 50% of American homes by the end of 2010. I don't know if you'd consider that soon or not, but 2 years and a quarter isn't a whole lot. With Fios speeds (assuming there are servers which have equal transfer) we will definately see Blu-Ray rips being downloaded (you already see them on many HD trackers).

But of course Blu-Rays will go out after a while... That's how things go...

@johnson I don't know what you mean when you say you can play it after 5-10?

@GG2K8 Still though if it does come out then, the price for that speed of internet might be costly. Although I don't how it compares to cable or DSL.
