Developer Bethesda announced release dates today for their highly anticipated RPG Fallout 3

The third installment in their Fallout franchise will be hitting North America on October 28, while Europe will see the game three days later on October 31.

Fallout 3 will be released for PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3, and according to Shacknews, Bethesda has noted there is also going to be a downloadable version for PC.  No word yet on who will be distributing the PC download.

why are there downloadable versions of pc games? i don't really get it, seems like there are no advantages to me, sure you can't scratch your disc but that's what backups are for
another thing is that the company will have to make a no-dvd version of the game which piracy groups could exploit
also, it would take a lot less time to just go out and buy it rather than wait for the download (and who knows if the line won't drop for whatever reason or there isn't a blackout while you're downloading the setup file which will be approximately...4-5GB?)

anyway, enough with my ranting, i'm very pleased to see it will be released for the 360, the whole reason i bought a 360 in the first place was so that i wouldn't have to upgrade my pc once a year to play all the new best games

I'll be waiting to play this title on the PS3. No, I'm not a fanboy. I believe in function over form, and in the case of my xbox 360 having disc-reading troubles, and seeing as how the PS3 is less likely to have that problem, the PS3 is my format of choice.

Same here. Another plus is that we get games sooner.

You'd be surprised. There's FF7 on the PC.

x-=> I prefer download versions myself. Being in Canada we don't get our games sometimes until like a week or two after the US release. With downloadable versions, you can get it the day of release. It is also often cheaper... and it is more convenient than going to a mall and tracking down a copy in a store.

I do prefer printed manuals to PDFs though. Kind of a trade off.

Also, as for the backups angle, you can usually download the game as many times as you like on your account, so actually, it is more secure than having a DVD around which may get scratched or lost (unless you are thinking really long term, like 5+ years. )
