Silicon Knights: still keepin' it fresh
Sean Ridgeley - Monday, August 18th, 2008 | 9:07AM (PT)

Next game "nothing like anything else we've ever made before"

Ah, Denis Dyack. Love him, hate him, or both, the Silicon Knights' (SK) head always has something interesting to say. He's been making the interview rounds lately, talking about Too Human, legal battles, the future of the industry, and other stuff. I prefer to stay out of the drama, so I'll keep it simple.

Talking to CVG, Dyack says future titles in the SK line-up will be "fresh", in multiple ways. This is a tradition they've kept up since inception, and things aren't changing in that respect:

"We've been lucky enough to make Legacy of Kain, Eternal Darkness, Too Human and if you look at all of those they're all really different," said Dyack. "The next game that we're going to announce, not including the sequels to the trilogy, it's nothing like anything else we've ever made before.

"We want to continue to do that to keep fresh. That's really what's important, and making sure that we continue to make new IPs but also continue to innovate in the genres that we try to... create content in, I suppose is the best way to describe it."

The developer is reported to be working on a new property with Sega, its first partnership with a non-platform maker in a decade. So it's said, they used Epic's Unreal Engine 3 to make the title, against the terms of the licensing deal.

In any case, it's great to see a developer in the position to be able to consistently create innovative titles, and be proud to say so.

innovative titles are great and all. But in the end Sk could actually end up dead because of there devotion to innovation. Sometimes changing things or coming up with a new idea. Does not work out. That said, it is truly great that at least one dev wants to go out, be bold, and break the rules.
