It's a big weekend for Trekkies -- many lucky fans will be heading this weekend to the big annual Trek Convention in Vegas, while the fans that can't make it, will be treated to a first look at upcoming MMORPG Star Trek Online.

So far, only a handful of screenshots have been released for this canon-abiding Star Trek game. The game has also had a topsy-turvy development cycle: originally, the title was being developed by Perpetual Entertainment. It ran into a bunch of bumps in the road, and after many legal shenigagins, development was transferred to Cryptic Studios (makes of the original City of Heroes) in January of this year.

The great and wise Spock will be the guest host of the Star Trek convention, and he will be introducing the gameplay footage of this sure-fire hit for the Trek-loving crowd. The event will be webcasted on the Star Trek Online website on Sunday, 1:30 PM PDT.

Not much is known about Star Trek Online, but some general information has been released. Players will be able to travel to all sorts of far-out planets and places, as well as live aboard (and perhaps command) spaceships. And it looks like you'll either be able to play the game as a wussy human, or a proud Klingon warrior.

That screenshot above is old, from when Perpetual was making STO. The new stuff Cryptic has shown looks MUCH nicer.
